Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle (忠于原味云吞面)
July 13, 2012
Sunday, 1.00pm. I was having lunch with Derrick at Tiong Bahru Food Centre, trying out some of the nice food in the hawker centre. After buying Koh Brother Pig Organs Soup, I was surfing the net and saw Leslie’s post on Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle (忠于原味云吞面). I decided to queue for it!
30 minutes later…
Aunty:”Yes, what you want?”
Me:”Hello Aunty, I want $4 wanton noodle, give me the fattest char siew you have!”
*Aunty shook her head, she gave me a “no more” sign.*
Feeling very disappointed, I just waited for my noodles. Minutes later, my tray was filled with a plate of wanton noodle FULL of glistering charsiew.
Aunty:”This one very nice one! Last plate uncle give you, $5 ok?”
Me:”OKOK! I give you $5!”
Me:”Which part of char siew is this?”
Aunty points to her armpit, said:”Pig’s armpit. Very nice one! Next time you want to eat, come earlier!”
Although I was totally not expecting the aunty to be demonstrating, I was very happy that I had the last big plate of pig’s armpits char siew! *victory sign*
This stall has a big sign pasted infront of the over which says “bu jian tian char siew” (不见天叉烧), which means the part of the char siew which does not see the sky. I initially thought it meant the pork was cooked in the oven, hence never see any light! (LOL, I was too creative). “Bu jian tian char siew” simply means pig’s armpit in a more polite way.
Pig’s armpit is the part between the shoulder and belly, which is the most flavourful part as it is marbled and tender. The char siew was well marinated, has lightly charred bits and does not add much colouring to it, hence giving it the perfect texture. Savoury brown soup was also poured over the noodles to enhance its flavour.
Zhong Yu Yuan Wei Wanton Noodle was also featured in 排排站查查看 variety show on Channel 8.
What more can I say? I am so happy to have finally tasted the legendary pig’s armpit char siew. And if you want to try it, please go there earlier to queue to avoid disappointment!
