Yong Xiang Xing Dou Fu – Famous Yong Tau Foo In People’s Park

10 minutes before the stall opened, a queue had already formed. I quickly rushed to join the throng of people.
They have just one item on their menu — Yong Tau Foo in one size ($4.50). This way, they follow a standard operating procedure when preparing each bowl and can serve the customers faster. It also makes taking orders easier, as there is only one item after all.
To be very honest, I didn’t know what to expect before trying this. It’s just a bowl of yong tau foo right? How good could it be? And then, the first spoonful blew my mind.
The soup was unbelievable savoury and sweet at the same time, but not overly so. It looked so clean, so unassuming, but, it was bursting with flavour.
I’m not the biggest fan of fishballs but I would just rate this one as average. Nothing fancy, nothing special, just a normal bouncy fishball.
The tofu, however, I definitely enjoyed. There are two different types of tofu in the bowl, a normal one with fish paste on top, and a fried one with fish paste as well. Both tofu were the silky smooth type, and the only difference between them is the outer crust on the fried version. If I was feeling healthier, I would prefer the normal tofu. But, the fried tofu definitely was tastier.
The chilli here is made with fermented beans, which gives the chilli a tangy kick which went really well with the fish paste that’s wrapped in beancurd skin. The tangy chilli spiced up every ingredient and made everything even more delicious!
From the queue alone, you can already tell that this is a yong tau foo worth queueing for. It really is a simple dish, but to make a simple dish shine is the tough part, and Yong Xiang Xing Dou Fu has nailed it.
