Yong Kee Famous Fish ball Noodle – Handmade Fishballs in ABC Brickworks Food Centre
February 11, 2019
On days where the queue at Tiong Bahru Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee at ABC Brickworks Food Centre successfully discourages me, I go to Yong Kee Famous Fish ball Noodle.
Yong Kee Famous Fish ball Noodle makes most of the ingredients from scratch. Think housemade fishballs, meatballs, chilli and even lard. Now, that’s really commendable! Naturally, this is extremely time consuming, but the effort and time that the owners have put into their craft definitely pays off.
I definitely had to have the Fishball Meepok ($4). I also greedily ordered a bowl of Teochew Meatball Soup ($4.8 for 8 pcs, $0.60 for 1 pcs).
If you’re up for it, add a piece of chilli to the meatball.
Just one bite of the meatball from the Meatball Soup ($4.8) spoke volumes about the quality and freshness of the meatball. The meatball was QQ, springy, and very meaty. What was more impressive was the assertiveness of the ingredients. I could taste the sweetness of the meat, occasionally accentuated by the herbs that were added in.
The Fishball Noodles ($4) came with slices of fish cakes, 2 pieces of dumplings and 3 handmade fish balls. Compared to the meatball which was a combination of fish and pork, the fishball had a cleaner flavour profile. The fishball was also very springy, which made it especially satisfying to bite into.
But in the end, this is still a noodle dish and all of the balls wouldn’t matter if the noodles aren’t good. And boy, it didn’t disappoint.
I was so happy with my al dente meepok, which was seasoned beautifully with their homemade chilli sauce. It was one of the better meepok that I’ve had in a while.
Notice how the noodles are sitting on top of each other, creating little pockets of space underneath? You can instantly tell that the noodles are firm and well executed, and not limp and overcooked.
When I was asking for the price of the meatball, the shop owners replied, in an almost apologetic tone, that it’s $0.60 a piece. They explain that due to the rising cost of ingredients, they have to adjust their prices accordingly as they are adamant on not changing their recipe. I smiled and said, “Aiya never mind la, what’s most important is that it is good!”
What I didn’t tell them was that in a market flooded with factory-made fish balls, $0.60 for authenticity is a steal.
