When it comes to soy sauce chicken, most foodies in Singapore make a beeline for the famous stalls in Chinatown, like Liao Fan or Maria Virgin Chicken. However, I found a new favourite today and that is Yit Lim Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken, thanks to my foodie friend Mark, who has been singing its praises for ages.

Yit Lim used to be located at Telok Blangah Crescent before moving to its current spot along Bendemeer Road. This move hasn’t deterred its loyal customers, with long lines of people eagerly waiting for their soy sauce chicken with egg noodles or rice. They start as early as 6:30 am, and even though they officially close at 2:30 pm, they often switch off the lights by noon because they sell out so quickly. So, if you want to try it, go early for breakfast.

We made sure to arrive early, the anticipation was palpable as we joined the queue, which is always a promising sign. As we inched closer to the counter, we saw the boss bringing out fresh batches of soy sauce chicken from the huge pot, making the wait all the more worthwhile.

Finally, it was our turn. We ordered a whole chicken, costing a reasonable $20, and opted to pair it with egg noodles. The presentation was straightforward yet appealing, with the chicken skin glistening under the lights. I was immediately impressed by the aroma of the soy sauce, which permeated the chicken. Every piece of meat was succulent and juicy, so tender that I stared at it after my first bite to ensure it was real. Even the breast meat was equally good, with a glistening skin and a sauce that was savoury yet balanced.

The egg noodles were an excellent accompaniment. Springy and devoid of any alkaline taste, each strand was evenly coated with the rich soy sauce and chilli. At just $1.20 per plate, it was a steal. I doubt you could get a plate of fried bee hoon for that price at other hawker stalls.

To complement our meal, we also tried the soup dumplings. Biting into them, I was greeted with a delightful crunch from the chunks of water chestnut, perfectly balanced with the well-seasoned minced meat. Each dumpling was a burst of flavor, adding another layer of enjoyment to our meal. They also sell char siew, which I didn’t try this time.

Yit Lim Hong Kong Soy Sauce Chicken has now firmly secured a spot on my list of top soy sauce chicken places in Singapore. The flavours are authentic, the portions generous, and the prices incredibly reasonable. You should definitely give it a try!
