Xiang Xiang Nasi Lemak 香香哪唏噜嗎 – The Oldest Nasi Lemak Stall in Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre!
January 09, 2022
I love Nasi Lemak as much as any Singaporean, so when I chanced upon this stall with queues that form from as early as 6 am, I couldn’t resist giving it a go!
Xiang Xiang Nasi Lemak 香香哪唏噜嗎 is the first nasi lemak stall to have opened in Tanjong Pagar Plaza Market & Food Centre, and its longevity can be attributed to the loyalty and support of their fans who are in line before the stall shutters even open.
The stall is helmed by Mr and Mrs Ho whose day begins as early as 3am, as the couple needs to fry their ingredients and chilli sauce, and cook their fragrant rice. Mrs Ho’s mother was actually the one who suggested that she open the first nasi lemak stall in the food centre, and she did, with Mr Ho joining her in the business sometime down the road.
Unlike most nasi lemak stalls which have set menus, the stall operates in a caifan stall manner where customers can pick and choose the ingredients they want.
After pointing excitedly at the tasty toppings through the glass panel, I finally got my plates of Nasi Lemak, which totalled up to $9.90!
For the first plate, I ordered the stall’s popular Ikan Bilis, Ikan Kuning (Yellowstripe Scad), Chicken Wing, Fried Egg, and Fish Fillet, all of which were served on a bed of fluffy coconut rice. The Ikan Bilis was crisp, and the chilli that went with it was slightly on the sweeter side but brought a good amount of heat that went well with the fragrant rice. The Ikan Kuning was well-marinated and surprisingly had a lot of tender meat in it. I couldn’t resist the golden brown chicken wing that was succulent and juicy. You can give the fried fish fillet a miss though.
For the other plate, I had Ngoh Hiang, Otah, Fried Egg, Chicken Wing, and Ikan Bilis. If you want an example of gooey perfection, it would be that bright yellow yolk that flowed out easily after it was cut. The Ngoh Hiang was well-packed with seasoned meat and boasted a crispy exterior that gave a firm snap the moment I sunk my teeth into it. Don’t be fooled by the supposedly unassuming chilli on the side, as it holds quite a fiery heat beneath that initial wave of sweetness.
I would say my day was brightened up by the affable elderly couple, and mouth-watering nasi lemak. I will be back!
