Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken – Run by an Ex-Chef from Raffles Hotel!

One of my must-eats in Hong Kong is soya sauce chicken. Thankfully, in Singapore, there are a few hawker stalls that dish out really solid soya sauce chicken too. One of them is Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken at Alexandra Village Food Centre. Xiang Jiang Soya Sauce Chicken specializes in soya sauce chicken(of course), and other dishes such as shrimp wanton and shrimp dumpling noodles. The chef used to work in Raffles Hotel, and has now ventured out on his own. He started out at Jit Poh Building at Keppel Road, before relocating to Alexandra Village Food Centre.

I ordered the Dry Soya Sauce Chicken Noodle ($4) as I don’t like my meat to be soaked in soup. There’s mee kia, a drumstick that’s been chopped up, two fresh stalks of kai lan miao, and soya sauce. I placed the juicy piece of meat into my mouth, and my oh my, it was good. The tasty chicken hit all the right spots. It wasn’t too sweet or salty — just the perfect balance of flavours.

Every strand of 100% egg noodle was coated with the delicious dark soya sauce.

The Soya Sauce Chicken Rice ($3.50/$4.50/$5.50) was pretty yummy too. The rice was drenched in the same dark soya sauce, and topped with five pieces of chicken, and a wing. I preferred the noodles to the rice, as it delivered a more satisfying bite.

The Shrimp Wantons ($1/$2/$3) deserve a special mention. Made fresh daily, these soft wanton wrappers are filled with a mix of well-seasoned pork and shrimp. Each wanton was stuffed with a generous amount of filling, and I loved that the firm filling was sweet, and fresh. It was so good that it reminded me  about the wantons that I had in Hong Kong.

I’ll definitely come back for their shrimp dumplings! You may have to queue for around 20 minutes during lunch hour, so be prepared! But, good food is worth the wait, isn’t it?
