We’re always happy to see home-based businesses flourish into physical stores because that means a new spot to spend the weekend at. Two Bake Boys was a sensational hit when they first launched their store specialising in beautiful crepe cakes on Instagram. After the success of their first physical takeaway store in Lavender, they decided to open a full-fledged cafe in Bugis in March 2022.

Located within Rest Bugis Hotel, Two Bake Boys is helmed by husband-and-wife team Kitty and Phillip and is named after their two young sons. The pair, who were both former cabin crew members, made the switch to baking and selling crepe cakes out of their kitchen after COVID-19 grounded the aviation industry.

The cafe gives off a feeling of warmth and tranquillity — it welcomes floods of natural light and is dressed with rattan chairs and pops of colour from the greenery. At the same time, the cafe also has a modern touch with its sleek grey walls and light wooden tables.

Along with perennial favourites such as Thai Tea, Thai Green Tea and Mango with Coconut Sauce crepe cakes, there’s a dazzling array of flavours available in slices or whole cakes. Be sure to double-check with the staff to see what they do have at the moment if you’re looking to dine-in!

They also offer ice-cream that can be paired with your crepe cakes as a set or enjoyed on its own. Popular choices include Thai Tea ($4.90), Strawberry Yoghurt ($3.90), Salted Caramel ($4.90) and Matcha Azuki Red Bean ($4.90). And if that’s not enough to satiate your dessert stomach, they have bakes like Classic Croissant ($4) and Kouign Amann ($6.20) as well.

Feeling more than a little peckish? Two Bake Boys has also been easing into serving mains inspired by Thai flavours. Once again, make sure to check with the staff for the day’s main specials.

I decided to get the Crepe Cake with Ice Cream Set ($10.90) — Thai Tea Crepe Cake paired with Tahitian Vanilla. The thin, handmade layers of Thai milk tea-infused crepes saw fresh cream sandwiched between, and was served with a side of Thai milk tea sauce for that extra boost in flavour.

Despite that, the fragrance of Thai milk tea was still on the lighter side, and would have been nice if it was slightly stronger. But that’s just my personal preference speaking as someone who really places an emphasis on strong flavours. I did like how the sauce wasn’t too thick and I found the textures of the crepe cake more than ideal. As for the Tahitian Vanilla ice cream, it was smooth and creamy.

The Earl Grey Lavender Crepe Cake was not only aesthetically pleasing, but it definitely pleased my palate as well. The fragrance of earl grey was very prominent and well-infused into the crepe cake layers. The fresh cream evened the flavours out perfectly and there was a touch of sweetness that didn’t overwhelm the flavours of the tea. I wasn’t too big of a fan of the Hokkaido Milk ice cream as the rich milky flavours didn’t really come through, which was a bit of a pity.

Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, the Croffle Krub ($8) might be up the alley of those who prefer waffles to cakes. I would suggest an ice cream flavour that is stronger like Thai Tea to go along with, as the Blue Pea Lemongrass only held a wisp of lemongrass that could be easily overlooked.

Their Latte ($4.50) was a little too acidic for my liking and would have been better if there was a bolder flavour profile.

At the end of the day, you can never go wrong with Two Bake Boys’ crepe cakes! With such an immaculate setting, and convenient location, this cafe is the perfect place to beat the heat.
