Folks who live in the Sengkang neighbourhood can easily quell their Thai fried chicken cravings at Tuk Tuk Gai Thai Fried Chicken! Opened by the same team behind Thai-Chinese restaurant Yaowarat Seafood, this quaint stall pairs this addictive street food with chicken rice or coconut rice. They also sell a slew of classic Thai dishes, so if you’re ever craving the rich flavours of Thailand, this is where you should head to!

Aside from their hearty meals of chicken rice and coconut rice with proteins such as chicken cutlet and spring chicken, you’ll see familiar dishes such as Basil Chicken/Pork with Rice ($5.90), Tom Yum Seafood Noodles Soup – Mama/Vermicelli ($6.90) and Tom Yum Seafood Soup with Rice and Egg ($7.90).

There’s even Mango Salad ($3), Pad Thai ($6.50) and Deep Fried Garlic Pork ($6.90). For dessert, tuck into their Mango Glutinous Rice ($5) and Tapioca in Coconut Milk ($3).

The Coconut Rice with Wings ($5.90) came with two pieces of crispy Thai fried chicken wings, a mound of coconut rice that’s been dyed a light shade of green, a sunny side-up, sambal chilli, ikan bilis and peanuts, and a smattering of fried shallots. Ingredients-wise, it was very much like what you’d get if you order nasi lemak.

Sink your teeth into the crispy skin of the chicken that has been marinated with a myriad of herbs and spices. There was a little bit of a peppery zing amidst the savoury flavours that went well with the tender and juicy meat beneath. The fried shallots added another depth of flavour to the chicken, making this quite the tasty meal already.

The coconut rice was very fragrant and the aroma from the coconut milk was strong enough. My only gripe was that the rice was not fluffy enough. The sambal chilli was on the savoury side and had a prominent hae bee hiam taste, along with a little kick of spice that lingered.

I also decided to give the Chicken Rice with Garlic Pork ($5.90) a go and while the bright yellow-hued chicken rice was not as aromatic as OG chicken rice, there was still that distinct fragrance imbued into the grains. The hefty garlic pork was similar to most waterfall pork you can find in Thai restaurants, but sweeter and slightly vinegary. It was essentially a cut of pork belly with layers of meat and fat.

There was an equally generous sprinkling of fried shallots here, but I felt it didn’t add much to the garlic pork as well as it did for the fried chicken.

The mango salad on the side was very tangy (maybe a bit too much?) and slightly spicy. The sunny side-up had a decently runny yolk so you can mix it in with the rice.

I couldn’t resist giving the Thai Green Curry with Rice and Egg ($5.90) a try. The slightly thick green curry roux was definitely spicy enough to get your taste buds tingling and had savoury undertones that can come off as a tad too salty for some. The chicken meat, unfortunately, had a bit of a funky taste so I’d probably skip this one.

Overall, I can say that their Thai fried chicken is a very solid dish and worth ordering! If you have a hankering for that, you should definitely visit Tuk Tuk Gai Thai Fried Chicken.
