初早餐 True Breakfast – Authentic Taiwanese Breakfast Joint Selling Delectable Omelettes & Sandwiches Hidden in Cuppage Plaza!
November 10, 2021
Tucked away in the quiet surroundings of Cuppage Plaza, 初早餐 True Breakfast attracts many with their “true” Taiwanese breakfast fare.
The cafe, which moved to its current location from its previous home in Chinatown, has an interesting name that features some clever wordplay in the first Chinese character, 初 ‘chu’ (translated Beginning or First in English), which sounds like ‘True’ in True Breakfast.
I arrived right when the store opened, and was shocked to see the small space packed with patrons. It took an approximate 30-minute wait before I was finally seated. The white marble tables, wooden chairs and impressive display of toy figurines gave off a homey atmosphere.
The menu has a wide variety of options with inexpensive prices. I initially wanted to try the Pork Chop Rice, but the Rice options are only available from 11.30am.
I went for a Taiwanese breakfast classic, the Ham & Eggs Sandwich ($4), which packs a thin slice of grilled ham, fluffy eggs, lettuce, and mayonnaise. The milk bread was nicely toasted and had a slight crunch on the outside, and was fluffy and chewy on the inside. The egg was moist and went well with the flavourful ham slice.
It can’t be breakfast without eggs! I, for one, love omelettes and had to order the Meat Floss & Eggs Omelette ($4.50). The fluffy meat floss was generously stuffed in a thin crepe-like egg wrapping, which gave the dish a light and savoury touch. However, I found the meat floss a tad dry.
If there’s one thing that reminds me of Taiwan, it would be crispy scallion pancakes. True Breakfast’s version of Scallion Pancakes ($4) was laced with the distinctive aroma of scallions, and hit the spot for me immediately. Each chewy layer had been fried to a crisp, and slathered with a special sauce.
The cafe also offers more robust meal options. I tried the Guo Shao Egg Noodles ($5) upon the staff’s recommendation. The noodles is one of the cafe’s more popular items among both locals and Taiwanese people! The dish features egg noodles with pork balls and beef slices. The warm soup was rich and smooth, and really comforting. Unfortunately, the egg noodles were slightly rough and could have been springier.
Wash your meal down with a cup of Milk Tea ($2.50) which comes in both iced and hot options. Similar to a bubble tea shop, you get to choose your sweetness level, which prompted me to go for 50%. The iced milk tea was quite rich, and a refreshing choice after a savoury meal.
As I left the cafe, I was surprised to find the queue stretching to the end of the corridor. With its warm atmosphere, delicious breakfast options, and hospitable service, I could definitely understand why!
