Traditional Famous Prawn Mee (Branch) – A Family Business Expanded
December 30, 2020
Deeply nestled in the west coast promenade neighbourhood is a prawn mee stall that receives a consistent queue during lunch hour. When asked what is the recommended variation for prawn mee, the boss replied “这里什么都好吃,看你要吃什么而已” (translation: Everything here is nice, just pick what you feel like eating today). Thus, I went with the Traditional Prawn Mee soup ($3.50) and Lor Mee ($3.50).
The stall seemed to be new. The signboard stated that this stall is a branch of the main stall. Turns out, it is a family business that has expanded. The main stall, which is at Hougang Green, is run by the boss’ father. Read more about the main branch here.
First up, we had the prawn mee. It was pretty good, and the broth was quite shiok. However, the meat served in the prawn mee was dry and a little too tough for my liking. Perhaps it’s just my personal preference for lean meat in noodles to be a little chewier. I decided to soak the meat in the soup for awhile more, which made it better.
The soup was really thick, which was the saving grace for the prawn mee in my opinion. You can request for your preferred type of noodles. If not, by default it is yellow noodles.
The other bowl I had was the Lor Mee. I was expecting it to be quite good as I saw quite a number of people ordering it. However, it was nothing too out of the norm for me. The fried fish gets soggy after being in the sauce for a while. The sauce was both thick and sticky, exactly like what a good lor mee sauce should be.
In my opinion, the quality of the ingredients can be much better as it is as important as the quality of the soup and sauce. Even though I have not visited the main branch yet, I do think that it might be a tad better. However, if you happen to be in the area, I’d still encourage you to give it a try. Perhaps it is to your liking!
