Tong Kee Traditional Braised Duck Rice @ Haig Road Market Food Centre
January 22, 2015
At 11am, we the foodies are here for the braised duck which Tong Kee Traditional Braised Duck Rice (东记传统卤鸭) is famous for. Being kiasu Singaporeans, we decided to come early to chop seats because it can get quite crowded during lunch. But the friendly owner Mr Lim is still preparing his food and told us to come back after 11.30am.
Mr Lim has been selling braised duck for more than 50 years. He used to be that small boy helping out in his mother’s trolley cart from this Princess (Margaret) Market at Dawson Road / Strathmore Ave area during the 60s. They then shifted to the now demolished Princess Margaret Market before he shifted to 40A Margaret Drive Hawker Centre. He has moved to Haig Road Hawker Centre about 3 years and is still at the stall chopping the duck meat himself every day.
I generally prefer braised duck rather than the roasted ones. Here, the duck is not very heavily braised, hence the light herbal flavours blend with the savoury gravy. Look at the glorious skin, it is fat and shiny, complete with a splash of the braising dark sauce. And I ate it all up as well.
Chewy, springy pig skin that appealed with a robust flavour. I wouldn’t go for their kway chap though because there was a slight smell on that day. The kway was all lumped together as well. But the chilli saved it all. Remember to also pair your duck with the chilli, you won’t regret it!
This duck stall has interesting closing days. They follow the lunar calendar and are closed on the 1st (chu yi), 8th, 15th and 22nd of the lunar calendar.
