The Whole Kitchen – Gluten-Free Bakery in Katong Serves Up Yummy Toasties & Bakes
February 21, 2021
Health is usually the last thing that comes to my mind when food is involved. If I like it, I’ll eat it (please don’t follow my ways as an example). And whenever I think about Katong, what typically comes to mind is the locally-beloved Katong Laksa or indulgent Birds of Paradise. But what if I tell you there’s a cafe there that sends out not only nutritionally-conscious but also delicious bakes? Enter The Whole Kitchen, a gluten-free bakery with healthy bakes and toasties.
Run by Singapore-based Aussies Susan Soulard and Anne Bradley, The Whole Kitchen was an online business which expanded to their first brick-and-mortar bakery cafe. Prepare to be charmed by this cosy white space spruced up with bright lights and vibrant greenery. Pick a seat outside and bask in the welcoming ambience and cool breeze. You’re all set for a relaxing day ahead.
Alongside an all-day menu of granola bowls ($14) and toasties, there’s a mouth-watering display of cakes and baked specials made with all-natural ingredients. Low in sugar levels, their treats rely on natural sweeteners such as honey, organic coconut sugar and fruits such as the bananas in the Banana Vanilla Bean Cake ($6.60).
I decided to give their Avo’ Toast ($18) a go because that’s always been a personal cafe essential for me. Arranged in quite the elaborate presentation, it came with a side of vibrant pink kraut and a hard-boiled cage-free egg with a sprinkling of pepper pepitas. Even though I’m not much of a sourdough person, I am now a huge fan of their sourdough 7-seed loaf. It was deliciously nutty and firm without any attempts at cutting the inside of my mouth.
The avocado came without any seasoning other than a lemon wedge so it’s a definite yes when the staff came over asking if I’d like any salt and pepper. The salad was very fresh with a hint of mint; I just wish they added a bit of dressing like olive oil. It also hit me after I was 80% through with my meal that this MIGHT have been a deconstructed meal (so kraut on the avo toast, egg and pepper pepitas on the salad) so maybe I did it all wrong but it was still a good meal regardless!
Once a limited-edition item, the Wildflower Honey Scone ($5) became a permanent fixture on their menu. I was expecting it to be served with chia jam and mascarpone (as it was written so on its little card) so I was a bit disappointed when it came with just a slab of butter on the side. Make sure to eat it together with the scone or you might find the latter a tad too dry. The scone exuded gentle fragrances of honey, but I felt that the flavours were quickly overshadowed by the dry crumbly texture.
As someone who loves desserts, I take my chocolate cakes very seriously. The Salted Chocolate Cake ($6.60) wasn’t too sweet, and you can taste the richness of the cocoa. Dense and slightly moist, this is one guilt-free treat I’ll come back for. My only gripe was that the salt crystals did not aid much in enhancing the flavours but that’s just my opinion.
I usually try out coffees when I visit cafes but this time, I opted for one of their smoothies – Wild Berry Bliss ($14) – instead. The mixture of wild blueberries, banana, coconut milk, organic cocoa nibs and flax seeds was refreshingly invigorating. I also noticed that they use biodegradable bamboo straws (or was it an organic grass straw). Props to them for going green!
My only regret was that I couldn’t stick around for lunch because their lunch menu sounded so good. Think Truffle Brie Toasties ($16) and Salmon Avocado Charcoal Rolls ($18). Maybe eating healthy isn’t so bad after all.
