The Little Red Hen – Rare Herb-Infused Nasi Ulam at Amoy St Food Centre
September 04, 2024
Nasi Ulam is a rather elusive dish, with only a handful of hawkers stalls selling it. So imagine how glad I was to discover The Little Red Hen at Amoy Street Food Center which focuses solely on Nasi Ulam! This traditional dish has both Malay and Peranakan influences, and comprises a mixture of rice and finely chopped herbs. The rendition here uses a mixture of 15 different herbs that is prepared in-house!
There are 4 Nasi Ulam sets you can choose from and each comes with a side of vegetables and tempeh, half a boiled egg and their house-made Sambal Ijo. You can order additional meats and sides such as bergedil as well!
The Nasi Ulam Ayam Percik Set ($8.50) comes with a huge piece of chicken thigh drenched in a thick coconut gravy. The grilled chicken was succulent and paired well with the creamy and savoury gravy.
The showstopper would definitely be the Nasi Ulam itself. Not only was the rice fluffy, it had a delicate fragrance that I enjoyed. The rice was so addictive that I completely wiped my plate clean in mere minutes!
If you are not a fan of chicken, you can try the Nasi Ulam Beef Rendang ($8.50) which promises beef that is tender, juicy and rips apart easily with just a pull of a fork. The blend of spices gave it a nice aromatic kick without being too overpowering.
As a spice lover, I highly recommend dipping the meats into their homemade Sambal Ijo. Shiok!
If you have yet to try Nasi Ulam, like many people that I know, you definitely have to visit this The Little Red Hen!
