I often think about how costly beef bowls are, and have always seen them as a luxe treat until I stumbled upon a Gyudon stall with affordable prices in the west!

Started by Wilson Ang, a former chef at DB Bistro & Oyster Bar by Daniel Boulud, The Gyu Co brings together Wilson’s French culinary experience and Japanese cuisine in the form of mouth-watering rice bowls.

Located at level 2 of Vision Exchange, the stall has both indoor and outdoor seating. The interior has shelves lined with wine bottles. When I went around dinner time, the staff were busy with group buy orders and delivery, which is understandable given the current COVID-19 situation.

I ordered the Classic Gyudon ($9.90, Double Meat: $15.90) which has 100g of thinly-sliced Australian Wagyu beef, an onsen egg, a bed of rice, onions, cabbage, and a generous drizzle of Gyu sauce.

Each slice of beef was fatty and tender. The house-made Gyu sauce that coated the meat enhanced the flavours further with its light sweetness and savouriness. The egg yolk of the onsen egg resting on the meat pillow broke apart with ease. However, I would have hoped for the rice to be fluffier and softer as it was pretty hard. If you’re looking for some side dishes to complement the Gyudon, opt for the set meal for an additional $3.50, which includes Miso Soup, Chawanmushi and a drink. The Chawanmushi was silky smooth.

Armed with French culinary techniques, Chef Wilson created a fusion bowl — Truffle Foie Gras Gyudon ($17.90, Double Meat: $23.90) — which sees generous wedges of Foie Gras, truffles shavings and a drizzle of truffle oil added to the classic gyudon.

Right off the bat, the distinct aroma of truffle oil filled me with excitement. The foie gras, which was the star of the show, was firm, moist and just delectable. I found it too salty after one too many bites though. Thankfully, the sweetness from the Gyu sauce balances it out. If the heavy-hitting contents are too much to handle, grab a bite of the onions and cabbage to cut through the strong flavours.

If you’re looking for a good gyudon at pocket-friendly prices, you might want to make your way here!
