The Forage Cafe is a newly opened cafe by 13 Honey, which replaced the now defunct D’zerts Cafe. Fans of D’zerts Cafe will be pleased to know that they’re supplying the desserts for the cafe!

Lining the walls are photographs of honey harvesting, and bee-related trivia. I found it interesting to learn about the process that gave us this liquid gold. To follow along the theme of the cafe, they tried to incorporate the honey harvested from their own farm in Malaysia, into as many items as possible. Even the coffee and tea come with a small shot glass of honey!

Their signature Smoked Salmon & Egg Grilled Waffle Sandwich ($17) features smoked salmon, egg mayo, and mozzarella sandwiched between two fluffy waffles. Accompanying the main cast is a side of truffle mushrooms, fresh greens, fruit salad, and multiflora honey.

The salmon-egg mayo-mozzarella-waffle combination is a savoury-sweet masterpiece that delighted my tastebuds from the first bite. The textural differences work really well too, which surprised me. The light smokiness from the salty salmon enhanced the taste of the egg mayo, and the light, airy, and crisp waffle was great.

To take it up a notch, drizzle a little of the multiflora honey on top to balance out the savouriness. The taste of honey doesn’t overpower the taste of the waffles, much to my delight. I usually find the taste of honey a little too strong to really enjoy together with other flavours.

If you’re a little more adventurous, you can pair the sandwich with a few fruit cubes. The watermelon and smoked salmon combo didn’t quite agree with me though.

The truffle mushrooms provided a strong earthy, aromatic flavour to the waffles. I’ll suggest against eating the mushrooms by themselves because it is a little pungent.

No meal is complete without dessert. We chose the Kahlua Tiramisu ($8), which was recommended.

As a lightweight, I can guarantee that the amount of coffee liqueur in the tiramisu will not affect you in any way. So, feel free to snarf down a whole tub by yourself. The light mascarpone cheese balanced out the slightly bitter notes of Kahlua. I liked that the tiramisu left leave a warm tingly sensation at the back of my throat.

Last but not least, we had the Honey Citrus Jasmine with Yuzu Blossom Jelly & Passionfruit Pops ($8.50). This lovely refreshing floral beverage will take your tastebuds to a field of flowers. The Yuzu Blossom Jelly’s bittersweet notes complemented the tangy passionfruit pops. The little bursts of passionfruit were fun little additions.

If you find yourself wanting more of the honey you just had in their cafe, you can purchase bottles of their multiflora honey, along with eight other types of honey that they produce. Each type of honey has different beneficial properties that is a natural remedy for different ailments. I find the stingless bee honey to be the most intriguing. You will normally associate honey with sweetness, but this variation is naturally sour! How cool is that?

You should definitely come here if you’re a huge honey fan. I look forward to see how else they will infuse honey into other dishes in the future.
