Tampopo Grand: Bluefin Tuna Sashimi

Located in Takashimaya Shopping Centre, Tampopo Grand is the premium brand of Tampopo Group. One consistent aspect of Tampopo is the fact that it provides better grades of meat and seafood without putting a premium on its price. Not only is the Bluefin Tuna Sashimi at Tampopo Grand air-flown regularly, it is of a higher grade and yet costs a mere $18 for five slices. To top it off, each slice of sashimi is adequately thick; giving a sense of satisfaction that the money spent was well worth it.

With many ingredients that are seasonal, it is undeniable that Tampopo Grand carries only the freshest stock available. We enjoyed Tampopo Black Pig Shabu Shabu Set ($50) allows us to enjoy Black Pig shoulder loin, loin and belly at one go. Indeed it is flavourful, especially after it’s had slices of luxuriously marbled pork dunked in. Eaten together with the sweet shabushabu soup and the cabbage, this dish is really good for the cold weather or just about anytime of the day.

Tampopo Grand: Vegetables

If there is one dish I would recommend, it would be the New Japan Beef Sukiyaki Set ($80). The Kata Rosu Sukiyaki Beef here is a new breed of Japanese beef from the Iwate prefecture and Tampopo Grand is the FIRST to bring this in to Singapore.

Each piece of beef is skilfully sliced such that they are thin enough to be easily cooked in the soup and still retains its melt-in-your-mouth texture. Despite tasting as good as the Wagyu breed, its cost remains lower due to the apparent difference in popularity between the two types of beef. In addition, it is less greasy, making it a healthier option for both the young and elderly.

The New Japan Beef Sukiyaki Set comes with a cast-iron pan over a portable stove. The broth is thicker than Shabu Shabu and usually meant for dipping. When the soup boils, you submerge the thin yet extra-large slice of Kagonoya beef brought to your table on a separate platter and swish it back and forth until it is almost cooked before dipping a raw egg that is lightly beaten into a serving bowl. The broth gives just a touch of flavour and a delectable taste to the meat. The end result, an aromatic lingering aftertaste that makes one yearning for more. It is served with fresh vegetables and white rice.

Tampopo Grand: Etanbetsu Soba

For people looking at a lighter option, the Etanbetsu Soba is a popular choice. Made from 100% buckwheat in Hokkaido, it carries a natural fragrance while providing an extra bite with its chewy texture. Enjoy a hot worl of Black Pig Tsuke Soba ($15). Using the same noodles as Etanbetsua Soba, it is eaten alongside a bowl of hot soba sauce which comes with strips of their famous Kurobuta Pork as well.

Tampopo Grand: Dessert

Dessert is not extensive but adequate. We had Ume Jelly, Black Sesame Ice Cream and Green Tea Ice Cream with sweet Red Bean.
