Supernova – A Mix of Delicious Food, Amazing Coffee & Immaculate Vibes in Tanjong Katong!
May 31, 2022
Tanjong Katong is quickly proving itself to be a hot cafe-hopping spot, especially with the successful opening of yet another cafe by the same group behind equally popular Atlas Coffeehouse, The Neptune and Apollo Coffee Bar. Top-tier vibes, a score of delicious food and desserts — Supernova’s got it all.
Upon arriving at the establishment, you’ll see that there are al fresco seats by the roadside and strong ceiling fans overhead to accompany the natural breeze. It’s pleasantly comfortable dining outside and the urge to either get your work mode on with a laptop or just embrace quality me-time is strong. Pawrents will also be happy to hear that it’s pet-friendly!
But once you properly step inside the cafe space, things take a classier turn. Apart from the impressive display of liquor behind the bar counter, the elegant interior has both wood and marble elements along with a ton of natural lighting streaming in from the large windows.
Their menu is split into three main sections – brunch, lunch and dinner, as well as sides and desserts that are on display inside the cafe. There are certainly a lot of appetising options that jump out at you like Steak Hash ($26.90), Eggs in Meurette ($24) and Wagyu Cheeseburger ($22.90). Their dinner menu is even more intriguing because it includes four different types of okonomiyaki and refreshed menu items.
For their coffee, Supernova offers two different espresso blends for customers to choose from — Mr Cuddles who is said to be bold, comforting and recommended by one of the staff to pair with white coffee, and Mr Brightside who leans more towards the acidic side with a “juicy and adventurous” personality.
I kicked things off with a brunch item. The Fried Chicken French Toast ($24.50) was an absolute vision of crispy fried chicken sitting atop Shokupan French Toast, served with a hot maple syrup on the side and a dollop of compound garlic butter.
The top of the French Toast was beautifully caramelised(like creme brulee!) and the bread was on the firmer side. I love how the fried chicken had the perfect ratio of meat to batter that had been seasoned to perfection. Drizzle the hot maple over, and take a bite of both the chicken and toast at the same time for a gorgeous medley of sweet and savoury flavours.
I also decided to try the Shoyu Butter & Garlic Rigatoni ($18) which was armed with an enticing aroma that instantly seduced my sense of smell. The little tubes of pasta were al dente and emitted a strong garlic taste along with the fragrance of shoyu butter. It was also topped with shavings of parmesan that didn’t seek to overpower the already delicious flavours of the pasta dish.
It’s not often I see Einspanner ($7.50) — a Viennese coffee with whipped cream — on the beverage list of most cafes so I opted for that with Mr Brightside (totally not because of the song) as my chosen blend. I drank it like how you would a macchiato, and the smooth coffee went amazingly well with the sweet caramel-like foam that was properly frothed to give it a light, bubbly texture.
In a single trip, Supernova has turned me into an absolute fan and the same can be said for most people considering the crowd there, even on a weekday afternoon. And with such good food available throughout the day, I definitely have equally high expectations for their dinner menu. Guess there’s only one way to find out!
