Str Tao Taiwan Cuisine – Taiwanese Stall With Over 30 Items Opens in Jurong East!

Another foodie gem tucked away in an industrial coffee shop! If you’re looking for your fix of Taiwanese cuisine in the Jurong East ‘hood, head to Str Tao Taiwan Cuisine which has an impressive menu of Taiwan-style ramen, mee sua, snacks and more to curb those cravings.
Run by Chef Johnson Ngiao who made a swap from cooking in Chinese restaurants to dishing out Taiwanese favourites in his own hawker stall, the stall is definitely doing well, judging from the consistent pings from orders coming through Deliveroo, GrabFood and FoodPanda.
The number of options here is astounding. Expect popular items such as Taiwan Mee Sua with Oyster ($6.80), Fried Rice with Pan Fried Chicken Cutlet ($7.80), Street Bombing Chicken Cutlet ($6.80) and four kinds of Taiwan scallion pancakes like Egg with Cheese ($5.80), Cheese with Pork Floss ($6.80) and Cheese with Sausage ($6.80).
There are even street snacks, if you’re just looking for nibbles, that include XXL Crispy Fried Cuttlefish ($9.80), Fried Enoki Mushroom ($4.50) and Garlic Pork Belly ($5.80).
As one of Taiwanese cuisine’s must-haves, their Signature Braised Pork Rice ($6.80) is a good place to start. Taiwanese pearl rice is crowned with chunks of braised pork belly, minced meat, cabbage, finely chopped spring onions, groundnuts, and a dollop of dry chilli.
Well-marinated with slight herbal infusions, the pork belly chunks have been braised for at least two hours with a concoction of spices. These yummy morsels have a desirable amount of fat and tender meat that practically melted in my mouth. A generous amount of addictive sauce was poured over the grains, and it was especially addictive with the minced meat.
The only shortcoming was that the rice which had no gravy drizzled over was slightly on the harder side. Perhaps it’s just my personal preference too, but the chilli mix which included deep-fried shallots, was too dry for my liking.
Still scratching your heads over what to order? The Taiwan Braised Beef Ramen Soup ($10.80) has my seal of approval. Look forward to a bowl of noodles topped with a good amount of beef shank and suan cai (preserved vegetables) in a deliciously fragrant broth. Sure, it’s a bit of a strain on the wallet for coffee shop fare but the flavours more than make up for it!
The beefy broth was undeniably full-bodied and rich, with subtle sweet, sour and spicy notes. As for the noodles, they were nicely al dente and I loved how the flavours of the broth seemed to cling onto each strand.
While they weren’t 100% tender, the beef chunks could easily be torn apart with chopsticks alone, with very fatty cuts that were absolutely indulgent.
The Deep-Fried Sweet Potato with Plum Seasoning ($4.30) is a classic Taiwanese street snack and this version didn’t make me feel as guilty for indulging in it — thanks to its light, crisp batter. Each sweet potato fry was dusted with plum powder and salt and well-cooked through.
