Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum – Fresh Handmade Dumplings in Maxwell Food Centre!
June 02, 2019
Regular patrons of the now defunct Queenstown Magaret Drive Food Centre will be glad to know that Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum still lives on in Maxwell Food Centre!
Run by fourth-generation hawker Sebastian Hu, Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum serves a limited mix of Shanghai-style dishes. What makes this stall so interesting is that it prides itself on making its own dumplings fresh daily!
Sink your teeth into the Guo Tie, or Fried Dumplings ($4 for 8pcs) and see what I mean for yourself! The dumplings are fried on order, so ready yourselves for a crispy parcel of juicy well-marinated minced meat and chopped chives. Pair the guo tie with the homemade vinegar and you have a match made in heaven!
If you’re feeling a little healthy, you should go for the Steamed Dumplings ($4 for 8pcs). It’s essentially the same as the fried dumplings, just steamed.
If you want authentic Chinese soup, then you need to try the Hot and Sour Soup ($3/4/5). Viscous and loaded with slivers of sliced pork and fish cake, the soup has a consistency that is reminiscent of an egg drop soup. While I found the Hot and Sour Soup palatable and appreciated its especially sour taste, it might be a hit or miss for you, due to its particularly strong sourness.
Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum also serves Shanghai Rice Cakes ($3/4/5) which I thought was a nice surprise! It’s rare to have rice cakes in a hawker setting. However, that surprise is shortlived when I realised that it was bland.
There must be a reason why regulars still frequent the stall even after its relocation to Maxwell Food Centre. I applaud their strict adherence to making limited batches of fresh dumplings daily. If you are at Maxwell Food Centre, do give Tong Xin Ju Special Shanghai Tim Sum a try.
