SP3 Chicken Rice – Singapore Poly’s Famous Chicken Rice is Now at Redhill
April 28, 2021
It’s been many years since I graduated from Singapore Polytechnic, but when I heard that the iconic chicken rice from food court 3 had closed down and relocated to Redhill Food Centre, I knew I had to make a special trip down to try it once more.
The same friendly uncles are still manning the stall, and were more than delighted to know that I was a Singapore Poly alumnus. I too was curious and eager to check out if the food was as good as I remember, or did nostalgia fool my memories?
I ordered the “Three Combination” set, which allows you to choose three types of meat. It comes with a plate of fragrant seasoned rice and a bowl of warm soup.
The classic Hainanese chicken was firm and was drizzled with a savoury sauce which accentuated, and complemented, the chicken’s naturally milder taste. To spice things up a little, dip the chicken in the rich and thick chilli.
When it comes to chicken rice, I always say that the chilli makes or breaks the entire meal. The chilli was as I had remembered —it’s rich and potent and was the perfect accompaniment to the soft white flesh of the chicken. I loved it.
Roasted chicken was always meant to more flavourful than white chicken. However, I found the roasted chicken here a tad too heavy on flavours as the brown sauce made the entire dish a tad too salty. The skin was roasted wonderfully though.
Did I remember the chicken being this flavourful? Not really. However, the owner mentioned that he had to cut costs on ingredients used due to the high rent back in Singapore Polytechnic, and can now afford to go full out in flavour — so that could be why.
The lemon chicken is always a controversial choice as people usually either love it or hate it. And I happen to love it!
The breaded skin of the lemon chicken cutlet, possibly due to the gravy and lemon sauce, felt overly soft and lacked the light crispiness that I was looking for. I’m glad that the lemon sauce wasn’t too artificial tasting or too pungent.
Last but not least, let’s talk about the soup, an often forgotten side dish. I have to say that it tasted just like how it used to. The soup looked plain but was anything but. It was a good palate cleanser, after a meal of heavier flavours.
Being just a short walk away from Redhill MRT, it’s well worth a trip for any former Singapore Poly students wishing to relive the good old days. While the overall taste and style remains pretty much the same, the flavours (especially for the roasted chicken) might be slightly stronger than what you remember.
For those who have never tried the chicken rice, it’s worth checking out if you’re in the vicinity.
