Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee @ Ang Mo Kio
The Delicious Thai Wanton Mee of Soi 19
Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee's Green Chilli

Now, you don’t have to travel to Bangkok to get Thai style wanton mee. At Ang Mo Kio Blk 151, just a few units away from Shanghai Ren Jia, there is a stall called “Soi 19 wanton mee 十九街雲吞麵” that sells Thai style wanton noodles.

You know, I have been staying in Ang Mo Kio for close to 30 years but I still didn’t manage to try so many good stalls here. Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee stall has been around for 2 years but it is only recently that it has been the talk of the town. When I read about it online, immediately, I jio-ed my makan kakis for breakfast on a Saturday morning.

Soi 19's Wanton Soup

No, they are not connected to SabX2 Wanton Noodles. The owners learnt the art of Thai wanton mee from his Thai god brother in Bangkok. We arrived at about 8am in order to avoid the crowd. Still, at this early hour, there was a steady stream of customers. So how are they different from the usual wanton noodles?

The first I noticed was the egg noodles. They were cooked al dente with prominent eggy texture. The noodles were springy to every bite and were complemented with fried wanton, char siew (roasted pork) and some greens.

Secondly, this wanton noodle has no sauce, no gravy and no chilli sauce. But don’t be deceived by its simplicity. Every mouthful, you get the eggy fragrance from the noodles accentuated by the crispy fried pork lard. Of course, if you want more punch, you can add in some chilli flakes, fish sauce, sugar or even green chilli by yourself. There was also a generous free flow of pork lard. As you can see, I added EVERYTHING.

There was nothing much to shout about the char siew, in my opinion. But the meaty soup wantons has a good size and liao (ingredients).

Of course, there are differences between Soi 19’s and SabX2’s. But I certainly enjoyed Soi 19’s version as a whole, with efforts of offering a whole range of condiments that gave us the “Thai” feel.

Word of advice, avoid the peak periods as you may have to wait up to an hour. And also, they have irregular off days, so please check their Facebook page before you head there.

Each bowl of wanton noodles costs from $3.50.

Update 1 February 2016

New Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee Photo

I am back at Soi 19 Wanton Mee in February just because I miss having their egg noodles. They were still cooked till al dente with prominent eggy texture. Each strand was springy to every bite. I cannot remember about the pork lard but I didn’t quite like it this time.

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee's Pig Trotter

Soi 19 Thai Wanton Mee’s Pig Trotter

Soi 19 has also launched the pig trotter with rice ($5.50). Nope, they are not anywhere similar to the ones in Bangkok. In fact, to begin with, they are not even related to SabX2 Wanton Mee at all. And SabX2’s pig trotter is much thicker because they added ovaltine in their gravy. However, here the pig trotter are much lighter in flavour and in fact, it was a little too watery. I felt like I was having porridge with the gravy. However, the skin is super thick with rather tender meat. Looking forward to a better plate soon!
