The renowned Bak Chor Mee hawker from Tiong Bahru has made a comeback, now at Havelock Road!

Commonly known as Sixties Chaozhou Traditional Bak Chor Mee, Ah Chye’s stall in Tiong Bahru was legendary despite not having a signboard. For more than half a century, he has been serving nostalgic, old-school bowls of minced meat noodles.

For decades, Ah Chye operated his stall at Seng Poh Road, becoming a staple in the Tiong Bahru community. However, when the coffeeshop operator decided to move on, Ah Chye was forced to leave his long-time spot. Undeterred, he has now found a new home at a nearby hawker centre on Havelock Road. Remarkably, despite the upheaval, his menu and prices remain unchanged, offering the same great value and quality that his loyal customers have come to love.

Ah Chye’s signature Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles are available for $5, $6, and $7 per bowl, depending on the portion size. In addition to this iconic dish, he also offers a variety of other traditional favorites, including Fishball Noodles ($4), Dumpling Noodles ($5), Dumpling Soup ($5), and Abalone Noodles ($12).

Despite being in his 70s, Ah Chye still cooks his noodles to perfection. While his actions may be slower now, he meticulously cooks each bowl of noodles with decades of experience, assembling them with care from start to finish.

We decided to order the $6 portion of the Mushroom Minced Meat Noodles which has prawns, lean pork, pork ball, minced meat, dumplings and braised mushrooms. From the first bite, it was clear that Ah Chye has not lost his touch. The noodles had a delightful bite, with a perfect al dente texture.

When I gave my noodles a good toss, the aroma from the lard was irresistible. The chilli sauce is moderately spicy, which is just right for many. The homemade dumplings, which have dried sole fish (ti poh), are really flavourful. The braised mushrooms are so soft and the gravy brings the noodles to another level. There’s just the right amount of vinegar in the noodles – you can taste the tanginess but the sauce is light enough such that you can taste the sweetness of the pork.

For anyone craving a taste of nostalgic, authentic Bak Chor Mee, Ah Chye’s new location at Havelock Road is a must-visit. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer to his legendary noodles, you’re sure to be delighted!
