Singapore Favourite Food 2013 – Feast on a spread of local favourites
July 14, 2013
Singaporeans love food. This is a fact. But when you go to hawker centre, you can probably find only 3-4 of your favourite stalls. But if you are at Singapore Favourite Food Village (SFF Village), you get to try all your favourite dishes in one go.
Singapore Food Festival is here again! In conjunction with the 20th edition of the Singapore Food Festival, food lovers can look forward to the Singapore Favourite Food Village (SFF Village) that is taking place from 12 to 21 July 2013 at Bayfront Avenue (Marina Bay). What’s the best thing? ADMISSION IS FREE!
Apart from the 20 favourite vendors voted from the online poll, this unique village set the stage for another 20 popular local hawkers and eateries. Hence, visitors will be spoilt for choice with a total of 40 different local favourite dishes to feast on. They include chilli crab, carrot cake, rojak, laksa, roti prata, popiah, briyani, oyster omelette, hokkien prawn mee, beef noodles, ngor hiang, tau huay and many more. Thanks to OpenRice for organising a makan session yesterday, we managed to try some of the dishes.
Zheng Xin Si Chao
Blk 41A Cambridge Rd #01-02, Pek Kio Market And Food Court Centre
Correct me if I am wrong. In my impression, this famous hokkien mee stall in Pek Kio Market And Food Court Centre uses thin bee hoon in their stalls. But here, they are using thick bee hoon. A little disappointed because it was too dry and the broth lack lustre. But the prawns here are definitely more fresh!
The oyster omelette has higher flour percentage little luxuries of creamy oysters. I was hoping it to be more crispy.
Apa Kitchen
Marina Square, 6 Raffles Boulevard #04-101/102
Apa Kitchen was founded in 1974 originating from Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru, passed down to the family. Very generous with their ingredients: pineapple, turnip, cucumber, apple, dough fritter and Peanut with signature Rojak sauce. The sauce is blended to a lighter and fresher taste.
Star Young Kwang BBQ Seafood
Alexandra Village Food Centre, 120 Bukit Merah Lane 1 #01-04
The crispy pork with salted egg yolk is very good. The pork is tender and generously coated with salted egg mixture which gave a burst of flavor and a delightful texture. Actually, I also love their crayfish with chilli crab sauce. The meat is bathed in a bright red, sweet yet mild spicy gravy. Goes well with mantou, yums!
Hai Sheng Carrot Cake
Blk 724 Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 #01-09, Singapore 560724
Blk 216 Bedok North St 1 #01-49, Singapore 460216
Hai Sheng Carrot Cake is a regular in SFF Village. I used to frequent the Ang Mo Kio outlet but stopped when I find inconsistencies in their carrot cake. On some days, it was very salty. Some days were oily. Some days were dry. But whenever I visit SFF Village, I won’t give this a miss. I don’t know why, but it always taste much better here at SFF Village as compared to their own stalls.
Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow
#01-12, Old Airport Road Food Centre, 51 Old Airport Road
Walked past this stall many times and everytime I will stop and look. Firstly because the owner has a pair of cool goggles. Secondly, it is very fragrant. So I must queue! Indeed very fragrant and this is one of the few stalls that serves it on the opeh leaf. A good plate of CKT.
Da Jie Niang Dou Foo
354, Clementi Ave 2 #01-253
Different styles of yong tau foo here. You can choose either Ampang sauce or hakka sauce. Although it comes in different set, the fried items were fried ala minute. We love the hakka sauce!
China Street Fritters
Maxwell Road Food Centre #01-64
Their ngoh hiang is probably one of the best in Chinatown but unfortunately, it did not shine here. The plate of ngoh hiang here was cold and dry. I guess it is better to visit their original stall.
East Coast BBQ Seafood
Lagoon Food Village,
1220, East Coast Parkway, #01-11
Topped with spicy and fragrant homemade sambal chilli, the tender and fresh stingray from this stall is sure to satisfy. Even the chinchalok sauce is homemade, using fresh shrimps, lime, chilli and onions. Love it!
The surprise from this stall is their STINGRAY CURRY PUFF! This is the first time I heard of it and tried it. Very shiok, spicy sambal with stingray meat wrapped with curry puff skin and fried till golden brown. THIS HAS TO BE MY TOP FAVOURITE!
Leo Satay
Website: http://leosatay.com.sg/
They serve chicken and beef satay and Japanese Yakitori in this stall. The satay has more lean but tender meats, with thick grainy peanut sauce. No wonder their satays are widely distributed to food caters, hotels, restaurants, fast food chains, food courts, and hawker centres, coffee shop and many F&B outlets in Singapore.
The Beef House
217 Syed Alwi Road, Gar Lok Eating House
Big fat beef balls which were bouncy!
Dessert R Us
We ended our meal with a bowl of ice kachang! The owners are Muslim and their desserts are halal. This is much needed since the weather is very hot!
