We rarely visit an eatery more than twice but we’ve made an exception for this particular zi char stall in Bedok – Sin Ho. I think that we have gone there 3-4 times in the past month. Even the husband has been nudging me to write about them because it’s worth recommending! Well, but the selfish part of me did consider keeping them a secret..

So, we were having dinner at Hai Kee chicken rice and the young owner recommended us to try Sin Ho. Blk 216 Bedok North Hawker Centre is a very quiet hawker centre at night and Sin Ho is the only stall that is open. They serve fish soup in the afternoon, and zi char dishes after 5pm.

We went for round 2 right after our chicken rice dinner. It was close to 9pm and they were almost sold out. We only managed to get a bowl of Batang Fish Soup ($4 / $5 / $6) which had fresh chunks of fish slices cooked in a peppery soup. Coincidentally, it was raining that night and this was just perfect. Firm but tender, the batang fish slices were cut thickly and uniformly. I’ve to say that for the generous amount of fish that I got, the fish soup is really reasonably priced (prices start from $4).

We went back twice more and the soup was much better! The appetising stock was unexpectedly flavourful, and filled with the natural sweetness of fish. Also, there’s no fishy smell at all. We also went for their premium Crayfish Seafood Soup ($10 / $15) which comes with two pretty huge crayfish. They were very fresh and had a generous amount of roe. Unless you are a big fan of crayfish, I think the Batang fish soup is good enough as there wasn’t much crustacean flavour in the crayfish broth.

Their zi char dishes were excellent too. We tried to order their Har Cheong Kai ($6 / $9 / $12) every visit but it is usually sold out by 8pm. When we finally got a chance to try it, you can really see the happiness on our faces. Without a doubt, Sin Ho serves the best har cheong kai I have ever tasted. OH MY GOD, IT IS SO GOOD HOW CAN I NOT FEATURE IT! The skin sports a beautiful red shade, and stayed crisp right till the end. Each wing is so well marinated that you can taste the prawn paste in every bite. No wonder we spied a plate of these beauties on nearly every table. Plus, it’s really cheap!

Another signature dish here is the Bitter Gourd Fish Head ($15 / $22) which was already sold out. So, we settled for Prawn Omelette ($6) and Mixed Vegetables ($8 / $12). Nothing much to shout about their mixed vegetables but the prawn omelette is pretty good too! It’s quite rare to see such huge and juicy prawns in an omelette.

Now, the secret is out. This is my current zi char obsession. They are a small zi char stall, so don’t expect a variety of dishes. The waiting time can also get a bit long. If you see me having dinner at the stall next time, please say hi!
