Shuang Bao Thai Hat Yai Fried Chicken – A Taste of Thailand’s Street Food at Bedok North Street 1

One of the best things about Thailand (besides the shopping) is their street food, especially Hat Yai fried chicken which originated from the Southern part of Thailand. Instead of being a whole plane ride away, Hat Yai fried chicken can be found at Bedok North Street 1! While the chicken is not peddled from an actual pushcart like how it’s done in Thailand, what’s on offer is largely similar.
As expected, the main star of this little hole-in-the-wall is crispy fried chicken. You can order different parts of the chicken ($1.80 for wing, $3.20 for thigh/drumstick) a la carte or opt for the sets which come with sticky rice and mango salad.
Looking for a meal for one? There’s Thai Fried Pork Belly Rice ($5.50), Thai Fried Chicken Rice ($4.50) and Thai Lu Rou Fan ($4.80) which are great options. And of course, the perennial Thai Mango Sticky Rice ($4.50) is just the dessert you need to finish off your meal.
If you’re the type to eat on-the-go or are just after some nibbles, tuck into sinful light bites that include Fried Pork Belly ($4.50), Fried Chicken Feet ($1.80) and Fried Chicken Intestine ($2.90).
I decided to get Set 6 ($10.80), which is enough to feed an army of two. It came with a wing, drumstick and two chicken thighs. In true Thai Hat Yai fashion, the chicken came with liberal sprinklings of fried shallots. Freshly fried and piping hot to the touch, each piece of chicken was coated with a gorgeous golden-brown coat of batter. The crispy skin was seasoned beautifully with a mix of spices that will have you reaching for more.
When it comes to fried chicken, there’s always a good chance of it being overcooked which results in dry meat. Well, we found none of such issues here. While the chicken could stand to be softer still, the meat was tender enough that it could be torn easily from the bone. The fresh, clean taste of the chicken was a match made in heaven with the flavourful skin and fried shallots.
This was my first time seeing ikan bilis in Thai Mango Salad ($5) and I thought it was to add some crunch but they were a little too soft and didn’t really add much of a difference. The salad itself did provide a nice refreshing change from the fried goods.
As if the fried chicken wasn’t calorie-laden enough, I got the Fried Chicken Skin ($3.50) which was enough to make me throw all my diet plans out the window. Flavoured with the same mix of spices as the fried chicken, the crisp skin emitted a satisfying “ASMR” crunch when we bit into them. Warning: this is not for the faint of heart (Absolutely worth it, though)!
Be prepared to spend some time waiting for your order to be prepared; I clocked about a thirty-minute wait and it wasn’t long before there was a mini crowd who joined the queue. To be fair, there were only two ladies on staff and you’ll walk away with freshly-fried chicken so I’d say it’s all worth it.
