Serangoon spans across a reasonably large area, from Avenue 1 to 4, to Serangoon North and Serangoon Garden. There is plenty of choices for good food to satisfy your tummies from breakfast to supper if you reside around this neighbourhood. However, for those who are unfamiliar with this area, and here for the first time, hope our list of 20 recommended eateries will help.
Lau Wang Claypot Delights
As its name suggests, Lau Wang serves sizzling hot claypot dishes such as their signature Sesame Oil Chicken, Spicy Sambal Sotong, and Frog Legs with Ginger and Onion, just to name a few. They aren’t stingy with the amount of boneless chicken served, and these tender pieces are drenched in a thick gravy of sesame oil and minced garlic. We like the spicy version with dried chilli.

Wimbly Lu
No introduction is required for this café as they are very famous for their waffles. Each waffle is crisp on the outside and fluffy and moist on the inside. Although there have been complaints about their small scoop of ice cream, we aren’t affected as we prefer eating plain waffles with just some maple syrup and butter.

Garden Street Kway Chap
It’s hard to miss Garden Street Kway Chap when there’s always a queue forming in front of the stall. The kway is soft and delicate, the braising sauce fairly good, the innards not too chewy, and the tau pok not too dry. Furthermore, the lean meat is tender and well-braised. We have zero complaints.

Aliff Nasi Lemak
This stall uses basmati rice for its nasi lemak, and we love it due to its lightness, and fluffy texture. Basmati rice is cooked with freshly-squeezed coconut milk and pandan leaves to accentuate the fragrance of this dish. High grade ikan billis is also used, and the wings are marinated with freshly ground spices. Don’t forget about the sambal that will knock your socks off.

The humongous Tissue Prata is good for sharing, and you can choose to top it with strawberry or chocolate sauce, maple syrup or honey. It’s really crispy and fluffy! Pair this with their 5-litre Teh Tarik tower which consists of the right amount of tea, condensed milk and ice. The last drop of Teh Tarik tasted as good as our very first sip.

Steam Box
Raw rice grains, together with your desired soup base, are first poured into the bottom of the pot. Raw ingredients will then go through high speed steaming, and it just takes about two to six minutes for a dish to be cooked. The natural juices and nutrients of the ingredients will be sealed in, hence the dishes boast a light yet robust flavour. At the end, the juices from the fresh ingredients are collected below the steaming plate to cook the accompanying congee, which caps off the hearty meal.

iSteaks Diner
There is a wide variety of steaks available here, ranging from $16 to $49. For $19, we had a thick slab of NZ Striploin, along with two side dishes. The steaks are grilled to your desired doneness, and the meat arrived pinkish and succulent. The layer of fat melted in our mouths, leaving a smoky-buttery aftertaste.

Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle
This plate of delectable hokkien mee comprises yellow noodles, bee hoon, eggs, beansprouts, slilced pork belly, prawns, squids, garlic, and sinful pork lard. All these flavours and textures burst in one mouthful. The noodles are well infused with the prawn stock, and you’ll be hit by a strong taste of “wok hei” which we loved. Paired with their specially made chilli sauce, the hokkien mee here is simply irresistible.

Chindamani Indian Restaurant
The prata dough had been kneaded well before it was cooked to a beautiful golden brown. It is thinner than the usual prata you get elsewhere, and very crispy indeed. The only downside is the lack of a buttery aroma that helps enhance the fragrance and taste of the prata. Remember to dip the prata into the curry that is moderately thick and consistent.

Sakon Thai
The clear Tom Yam Seafood Soup has a mix of zest and spice. It’s not fantastic but it is definitely good enough to satisfy a random craving for Thai food if you stay around the area. The Mookata Pork Slices were well grilled, with a hint of smokiness. We also had Thai-style Kang Kong which was fiery.
