Seafood Paradise Reopens at VivoCity – Enjoy 50% OFF Their Signature Creamy Butter Crab and More Before 9th May!
April 11, 2021
Seafood Paradise is where it all began. The brand was the first restaurant by Paradise Group and had humble beginnings as a small eatery at Defu Lane. The restaurant soon gained a loyal following, garnering a reputation for serving Singapore-style seafood and Chinese cuisine with a touch of innovation. I remember dining at Defu Lane in my younger days. The butter crabs and crispy kang kong were two dishes that kept us going back.
After a two-year hiatus, Seafood Paradise has finally reopened at VivoCity! The cozy restaurant is spacious and ideal for family gatherings and celebrations.
If you dine here in the evening, go for the outdoor seats which offer an amazing waterfront view. What’s better than taking in a nice view while digging into Seafood Paradise’s popular Singapore Style Chilli Crab ($9.50 per 100g)? Expect fresh Sri Lankan mud crabs cooked in a mildly sweet, spicy and tangy sauce. Don’t be surprised if you find everyone fighting for the last piece!
While Seafood Paradise is incredibly famous for its fresh chilli crabs, it is actually the original creator of Creamy Butter Crab ($9.50 per 100g), and its rendition comes topped with coconut crumbs. To date, it remains a bestseller. The rich and creamy sauce is made fresh daily using aromatics such as curry leaves, white pepper, lemongrass and chilli padi. The lovely flavours soak into the firm Sri Lankan crab meat perfectly, and you may find yourself in a finger-licking situation. Be sure to get some mantous and mop up every bit of the sauce.
Another innovative creation that has won the hearts of gourmands is the Crispy Kang Kong topped with Cuttlefish in Homemade Seafood Sauce (from $15.80). I had it at all the previous Seafood Paradise outlets and I am happy to eat it here again. This is the restaurant’s version of the classic you he eng cai dish commonly found at zi char establishments. The kang kong is lightly battered and fried to a golden-brown crisp and served with poached cuttlefish and a drizzle of the chef’s special sweet sauce made with hoisin sauce, oyster sauce, sweet Thai chilli sauce and sesame oil.
Our team thoroughly enjoyed the juicy Poached Live Tiger Prawn with Chinese Herb in Superior Stock (Drunken Prawn) ($29 for 300g). Even though this seems like a simple dish, the prawns need to be as fresh as possible. The slurp-worthy superior stock is simmered with a variety of Chinese herbs, rice wine and huadiao wine for more than three hours, making every sip heavenly.
Are you a huge fan of salted egg yolk and the luxurious Boston lobster? Well, Seafood Paradise has added a Boston Lobster tossed with Salted Egg Yolk to their spellbinding repertoire of seafood dishes. The dish is a little drier than usual, but that’s probably not going to stop you from picking off the crispy bits and enjoying them. Yes, we know you will be wiping your plates clean.
Another dish that you must order is the Steamed Dragon Tiger Grouper with Preserved Turnip. Steamed perfectly, the flesh of the fish was tender and juicy with savoury accents from the light soy sauce and chye poh. This is one of those times I would order a bowl of white rice just to pair with the fish.
Dim Sum Available During Lunchtime
Besides seafood dishes, the restaurant also doles out traditional Hong Kong-style dim sum offerings during lunch. Highlights include Steamed Pork Dumpling ‘Siew Mai’ ($7.80/4pc), Baked BBQ Honey Pork Pastry ($7.80/3pc), Deep-fried Prawn in Beancurd Skin Roll ($7.80/3pc) and Mini Egg Tart ($6.80/3pc).
I wanted to pack home more of those brilliant egg tarts! Seafood Paradise uses Japanese eggs, hence the custard has a lovely bright orange hue. The custard has a silky texture, and the delicate flaky crust crumbles with each bite, exuding a buttery fragrance.
