Sally Roast Meat Rice – Crispy Roasted Pork Belly & Charcoal Roasted Char Siu Hidden in Northstar @ AMK!
October 18, 2021
It seems like more hidden gems in industrial parks are being discovered lately and Northstar @ AMK has some pretty good nosh like Rong Ji Seafood and The Famous Vadai Uncle. For those of you with a hankering for roasted meats, you’re in luck! Sally Roast Meat Rice not only serves char siu and sio bak but also roasted duck.
Much like most coffee shops in industrial areas which cater mainly to office workers nearby, this coffee shop has seen a reduction in footfall, and it was generally a quiet affair at Northstar @ AMK. While half of the stalls have their lights dimmed, the roast meat stall remained brightly lit with a mouthwatering display of beautifully charred meats to entice any hungry soul.
No Sally in sight; instead, I was served by a no-nonsense chef who deftly prepared my order in the blink of an eye. There’s some variety in the menu with options of Duck Leg Rice ($5.50), Roasted Duck Noodle ($4) and Chicken Rice ($3). They also have Signature Cabbage ($2/4/6) and Yam Rice ($0.80) to pair alongside your roasted meats.
Since I only had enough space in my stomach for one dish, I went for a mixture of Char Siew and Roasted Pork with Rice ($5) and added a braised egg for $0.50. The mound of white rice was topped with glistening pieces of charcoal-roasted char siu and crispy pork belly with a liberal drizzling of thick braised sauce.
The char siu pieces were on the thicker side and their sweetness paired well with the sauce, which had gentle herbal notes so it doesn’t get too jelak.
But the star of this plate was undoubtedly the sio bak. The roast pork was crowned with a delightfully crisp crackling. While there wasn’t much fat, the saltiness of the crackling balanced the flavours all out and made the sio bak very addictive.
What truly surprised me was the accompanying soup, which was quite the dramatic pairing with the roasted meats and rice. Most places would serve clear, light-bodied soups to refresh the palate but Sally Roast Meat Rice aims to leave you wanting more.
The salted duck vegetable soup was very robust and full of savoury-sweet flavours, yet it didn’t overwhelm the main dish itself. There was even duck meat thrown into the mix; albeit a tad too stringy but it was still quite tender and easy to pull off the bone.
My only regret is that I didn’t get the chance to try the roasted duck but the roasted pork belly is definitely worth a trip!
