Rice & Roll – Traditional Freshly-Milled Chee Cheong Fun Tucked Away in Ang Mo Kio

Chee cheong fun is best known for its simplicity and straightforward taste with only two components to judge most of the time: the rice rolls and their accompanying sauce. But lately, many hawkers have started experimenting with flavours and ingredients to jazz up traditional favourites. Rolling into the hawker scene with such ideas is Rice & Roll – Traditional Freshly-Milled Chee Cheong Fun.
Just as its name suggests, you won’t find any factory-churned chee cheong fun here. Everything is made from scratch, beginning with the rice rolls and ending with the sauce. And if you feel that chee cheong fun isn’t enough to fill you up, fret not as they also serve dim sum like Siew Mai ($2.80 for three pieces), Prawn Dumplings ($2.80) and Chicken Feet ($2.80).
Benjamin Tong (pictured) and Jackie Jiang, the founders of Rice & Roll, double up as chee cheong fun chefs and gymnastic coaches. Talk about multi-talented! In truth, the pair had zero f&b knowledge prior to the opening of their stall. Because of the pandemic, they decided to roll up their sleeves and open up a stall after learning how to make a dish they personally liked, but with a few choice tweaks.
Their rice roll batter is freshly made using their in-house stone mill every morning in batches. The batter is then steamed, zhng-ed up with a variety of ingredients and doused in their secret sauce. Condiments, which consist of crunchy fried onions and sambal chilli sauce, are free-flow.
I decided to start off with the no-frills Original ($2.50). It was actually quite the hearty serving, which didn’t surprise me considering that one portion of their chee cheong fun measures up to 50cm before getting cut into 16 pieces. The silky, gossamer-thin sheets really soaked up the sauce. The latter, rather than being the typical heavy, sweet sauce you’ll find in Singapore, was a light, savoury one that was very addictive. The sambal chilli did give it a bit of kick, though I would have liked the heat to be a bit stronger.
Char Siew Chee Cheong Fun ($3.50) is quite the popular choice among many patrons but I saw that they had a Meat Trio ($5) option and since I love meat, how can I pass up on that? Packed with char siew, chinese and Taiwan sausage, this will definitely fill you right up.
My wandering eye also caught sight of the curious Eggs Trio ($4) of century egg, salted egg and regular egg. It was something that I haven’t seen at other chee cheong fun places and Benjamin shared with me that it was actually inspired by zi char stall options, so he decided to take the leap and put it on the menu.
If you thought the Meat Trio was packed, you should see the Eggs Trio. They definitely don’t skimp on the ingredients here because I could see them peeking out in between the sheets of rice rolls. The taste of salted egg was quite pronounced and overshadowed the taste of the century egg and regular egg but all in all, it was an interesting dish that I wouldn’t mind eating again.
I’d skip the Scallop ($4.50) because the fleshy morsels of seafood were very little in quantity. But then again, if they were to increase that, I reckon the price of the dish would rise too as scallops don’t come cheap. If you’re just hankering for a lil’ bit of seafood to go with your chee cheong fun, there’s no harm in opting for this one. At least they tasted as fresh as their rice rolls!
Rice & Roll definitely has the potential to go far and despite their innovative combination of ingredients, they’ve got the basics pat down. In fact, the original was already enough to turn me into a fan when I haven’t even tried the other variations yet. Man, now I’m really craving for their chee cheong fun!
