Braving the notorious traffic jam, we set out on a culinary adventure to Johor on a Monday morning to satisfy our cravings for some authentic Malaysian cuisine. Roti Prata (or Roti Canai) is one of the most beloved breakfast dishes, and finding the best one is a never-ending quest.

I know I have covered Roti Canai Bukit Chagar quite extensively in my previous article on 13 Cheap and Good Food Near Johor Bahru Checkpoint. For this makan trip, my JB friend recommended me another hidden gem for some piping hot, freshly made Roti Prata — Restoran Selera Selatan.

The shop closes at 11am in the morning, hence our anxiety grew as we took awhile to cross the border. We only managed to reach the eatery 30 minutes before closing time. Thank goodness there were still a few balls of prata dough left!

From the moment you enter the eatery, you will catch a mouth-watering aroma of freshly made prata in the air. The prata here was slightly crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, with just the right amount of oiliness.

Here’s how you should eat it: ask for a plate of sambal chilli and pair your roti prata with it and curry.

One of the must-tries here is the golden brown Roti Telur Bawang in which chopped onions and egg are added. The combination of fluffy crispy prata with the savoury flavors of egg and onion was simply divine. The richness of the egg added a creamy texture to the dish, while the onions lent a nice crunch and a hint of sweetness. Their version of the dish is served piping hot and packed with flavour. The prata had a beautiful crisp, and still retained a soft and chewy texture on the inside.

Another popular variation is the Roti Prata Plaster where a plain prata is served with a fried egg on top. The dough is first flattened and stretched until it is paper-thin, before it is cooked on a hot griddle until it’s crispy and slightly charred. A fried egg is cooked separately, and placed on top of the prata.

The crispy, flaky roti prata with the runny egg yolk made a simple yet satisfying breakfast!

Besides roti prata, they also serve nasi lemak and lontong. We love the lontong that is served with a creamy and aromatic satay sauce. The Mee Sotong is also recommended!

The breakfast was well worth the long drive and journey, and we left with satisfied stomachs and happy hearts. It’s no surprise this place is always packed. I can’t wait to go back and try the other prata varieties!
