Reimondo Seafood Congee, the new kid on the block at Pasir Ris Central Hawker Centre, has joined the hipster hawker clan. The stall can be spotted easily after stepping off of the staircase on level 2. It stands out, yet blends in at the same time, with its wooden signboard that has Japanese characters spelling out Rei-mo-n-do. Although it may not be the most eye-catching stall around, their food would keep you coming back for more.

This new stall has only four specially curated items on the menu – Prawn UFO ($4.50, 4 pieces), Seafood Congee ($6.90/$12.90), Tea Smoked Salmon ($9.90) and Smoked Salmon Flakes and Lala Congee ($3.50). I got the first three on the list for this review. Here goes.

First up, the main star of the stall – Seafood Congee ($6.90). The stall assistant shared that the difference between the $12.90 version and the $6.90 one is the portion. The $12.90 version is good for two pax while the $6.90 one caters for one.

The seafood congee comes in a relatively huge bowl filled with fresh seafood and condiments. These condiments added a different texture and taste to the congee. The condiments include deep-fried dough fritters (you tiao), fried chai por (preserved radish bits), smoked salmon flakes, spring onion, a long dash of prawn-head infused oil.

The congee was very gooey, and the grains were cooked till they were hardly discernible. The seafood was fresh, and the scallop was still juicy and not overcooked, but the prawn was a little tough.

I was not expecting much flavours because I’ve always thought that congee is plain and is food for days when we feel under the weather. I was proven wrong upon tasting this. Every scoop came with a strong wok hei and was packed with umami. Yum.

Next, the Prawn UFOs. It is deep-fried upon order, and is really cutely shaped in a round disk, with a prawn filling in the centre. The accompanying sauce was a sweet mayonnaise sauce that is similar to those that you get in Chinese dim sum restaurants for certain fried dumplings.

The mayonnaise went really well with the wanton, and I liked that the wanton skin remained very crispy even after I packed it home. It has a crisp that was very shiok. If only they were slightly more generous with the prawn filling!

Last but not least, the Tea Smoked Salmon. It’s not just any other slab of salmon that you find in other Japanese hawker stalls. It’s good quality smoked salmon that is value for money. Although it looks kind of raw on the outside, it’s very well cooked on the inside. It had a strong smokiness and was adequately savoury.

What makes it even better is the wasabi mayonnaise that comes with it. It added acerbic hints that melded very well with the smokiness of the salmon. The wasabi was not too strong or harsh, and its distinctive spiciness which usually rushes up one’s nose was mellowed out by the sweetness of the mayonnaise. reimondo seafood congee-15

In a nutshell, Reimondo Seafood Congee offers you quality seafood and smoked salmon at affordable prices. It has only been about a month and a half since their opening. I hope their superb seafood congee which packs a punch can withstand the test of time !
