Redhill Porridge – Totally Worth Waking Up Early for!

Staying near Redhill Food Centre, Redhill Porridge’s owner starts preparation as early as 4:30am. He has been selling porridge for more than 30 years.

Organised and efficient in his own mess, the owner churns out each bowl of porridge swiftly. The queue, though long, thus moved quickly. With only 2 options to choose from, making a decision was easy. I opted for the Pork Porridge with egg ($3.50) since there was a huge photo of it on the shopfront.

The porridge looked plain and simple. However, as I stirred the bowl of porridge, I was impressed by the amount of ingredients hidden in it. I was most excited about breaking the egg, of course. I knew the egg will make the porridge richer and tastier! Indeed, the delightful porridge was smooth and a tad thicker after being mixed with the egg.

The pork liver was extremely creamy, and not bloody! Usually, I replace the pork liver with pork balls because I was afraid of getting poorly-cooked pork liver). The yummy porridge was brightened up by the lovely and distinct flavours of pork liver, and I found each mouthful addictive and extremely gratifying.

The pork slices were slightly chewy and a little smooth. My guessing is shu fen (flour) was added to make the texture really smooth and not dry.

As I worked my way through the porridge, I understood why it was on the bland side. The pork balls were soooo flavourful that it was a tad too salty for me. But pairing it with the porridge really balances out everything. My eyes lit up like everything made sense and I was literally enlightened!

By 10am, the very last bowl of porridge will be gone. Redhill Porridge will definitely not wait for those who can only wake up for brunch. So head down early to avoid disappointment.
