Quan Lai Guo Zhi – Popular Kway Chap in Macpherson Road Opened Till Midnight
September 30, 2016
We wanted to eat crab wanton mee for lunch but it was not opened on our day of visit, so we settled for Quan Lai (泉来粿汁) in the same coffeeshop after looking at so many orders in many tables. With no expectations, what came was a nice surprise. The sliced duck is drenched with smooth and lightly thickened “lor zhup”. It has the bite and not too gamey, with a balance of sweet and savoury flavours. Pairs well with rice definitely, but I thought the kway was a little too thick for my liking
This rich sauce was ladled over the duck, liver and offals—all of which were cooked to the right doneness. My favourite part is the deep fried intestines. Yes, their intestines are deep fried to get a crackling skin and felt like I was eating suckling pig. Well cleansed intestines win the game and it’s so good with the chilli sauce.
Another interesting part is, they also added pineapples to bring a citrusy flavour to the braising sauce, which I thought it was quite unique because I haven’t seen anyone doing it. But the pineapple did help to kill some oiliness and make the kway chap less “gelard”. Oh well, sadly it is not very cheap. The photos you see above are for two pax and it costs us S$28.
