I’m always a sucker for pretty, Instagrammable food but Porcelain by Gratefood Co takes the cake with their magical-looking smoothie art bowls. Not only do they look absolutely mesmerising, but they’re also healthy to boot and chock full of natural ingredients like pink pitaya, granola, fruits and organic açaí pulp that aids in nourishing beauty. Talk about a guilt-free dessert!

Tucked away in a corner of The Paragon, the plant-based cafe is a collaboration between superfood distributor Gratefood Co and wellness spa Porcelain Origins. The cafe serves up açaí smoothie bowls, chia pudding and coconut yoghurt bowls, and thick smoothie blends. They’re also the first in Singapore to brew up mushroom and adaptogen speciality coffees.

The elegant and chic interior is decked out in hues of turquoise with black marble tabletops and plush seats. Its elusive location makes it a safe haven to rest your feet after a day out shopping, or even to escape the crowds in Orchard.

While their popular Açaí Smoothie Bowls are quite the looker, it was their Smoothie Art Bowl series that had me instantly captivated. There are three gorgeous themes to choose from, and each one requires 20 minutes of meticulous prep time and is priced at a whopping $24. But before you crinkle your nose at this price tag, each bowl is good for sharing between two to three people and comes with a complimentary pot of floral tea to sip on as you wait.

Among the choices of Alpina, Aloe Verah, Calming Spirit, Orchird Oolong and Lychee Black, I went for the Orchird Oolong. The floral hints from the orchird melded well with the soothing oolong tea in this fragrant concoction, and acted as the perfect palate cleanser.

The first bowl to arrive was the Starry Galaxy. Have you ever gotten that feeling of crashing back down to earth when food in reality does not look anything like how it does in photographs? That was definitely not the case with this ethereal creation. Their signature açaí blend is mixed with Japanese charcoal powder, coconut yoghurt and pink pitaya before being finished off with a sheen of edible silver spray to mimic the starry sky, and topped with vegan dark chocolate, star-shaped bananas and sprinkles.

Presentation-wise, it was a satisfying sight. Then came the ultimate question — does it taste as good as it looks? Digging into it was a walk in the park as the spoon glided smoothly through thick layers of maple granola, organic raw cocoa nibs, feuilletine, banana and chocolate oatmilk chia pudding. As someone who enjoys the sweeter things in life, I was especially comforted by the buttery crunch of the feuilletine.

The fun Beach Paradise did not fall short in terms of looks and taste. The creamy blend of blueberry, blue spirulina and banana ice cream paints a pretty picture of the blue ocean with adorable banana-shaped fish swimming on top. Beneath it lies banana “starfish” sunbathing on a bed of maple granola, organic raw cocoa nibs, feuilletine and chocolate oatmilk chia pudding.

The only thing that really ground my gears was having to bite down multiple times on the hard pearl and silver deco sugar balls. Hopefully, they’ll find a more “comfortable”, and tasty, alternative.

I can see myself making a trip back to Porcelain Cafe by Gratefood Co, especially on payday. After all, there’s still the fairytale-like Unicorn Dreams bowl which I haven’t tried, and the luscious smoothies that were calling out to me. Hooray for healthy desserts!
