Pompompurin Café – 1st Sanrio Character in Singapore!
April 18, 2016
The adorable Sanrio character-themed Pompompurin Café has debuted on our sunny island today. This café is Pompompurin’s first appearance in Southeast Asia. Pompompurin is a golden retriever dog Sanrio character first introduced in 1996. He lives in his own basket at his owner’s house and wears a trademark brown beret. He loves collecting shoes, which includes his owner’s father’s leather shoes, his owner’s mother’s sandals; just to name a few, before hiding them. This cute puppy enjoys drinking milk and eating soft food and pudding that his mother makes.
Pompompurin has many friends, including a hamster called Muffin, a mouse named Scone and a bird. He was twice voted Most Popular Sanrio Character in the Strawberry News, a magazine published by Sanrio and also the first place winner in the Sanrio Character ranking in 2015.
Covering a space of 1,900 square feet in Orchard Central, die-hard fans can expect to be surrounded by all things Pompompurin at this café. Besides being greeted with a canine-themed decoration, the full menu consists of cute-looking food and drinks in the shape of Pompompurin. Every Pompompurin café in the world takes on a different theme that’s in line with the local culture. Hence, we have the “garden city” theme, inspired by Singapore’s lush greenery. There are four 4-seater booths called “Tomodachi House” (Friends House), which feature one of Pompompurin’s friends – Bagel the Squirrel, Coconut the Monkey, Mint the Frog and Macaroon the Golden Retriever.
Speaking of cute-looking Pompompurin-styled food and drinks, we tried the Taco Rice in a Cup of Friendship ($19.99) which includes ingredients such as minced meat, tomatoes, avocado, eggs, tacos and rice. This is best eaten by lowering Pompompurin and Muffin on the meat and veggies before mixing it all in together. The overall taste is very savoury and robust. However, we preferred the other main.
Pompompurin’s Coconut Milk Chicken Curry ($17.99) is a mild curry created from the sweet and rich flavour of coconut, before topping with lots of vibrant veggies such as yellow and red capsicum that’s in the shape of hearts, stars and even fork and spoon. This is such a colourful and cute dish!
Other mains include Pompompurin’s Beef Stroganoff ($18.99), Spaghetti Napolitana ($26.99) and Everybody Gather Around! Picnic Plate ($24.99). If you’re feeling extremely hungry, you can share the picnic plate which is a sumptuous plate with prosciutto & Camembert cheese bagel sandwich, eggs benedict with a huge slice of bacon and more. Be sure to look out for Pompompurin’s friends hiding inside the dishes!
We had the Bagel’s Special Pancake Tower ($21.99) for dessert, which includes a Pompompurin take-home souvenir mug. This is a decadent dessert with five layers of pancakes filled with various sauces such as caramel, chocolate, custard and more. This dessert is accompanied by some fresh chopped fruits too. Do look out for other menu items with the “mug” icon as these items come with the Pompompurin take-home souvenir mug.
As for drinks, you can try Mango Soda & Ice Cream Float ($11.99) for a refreshing start to the day. This is a stylish cocktail of mango puree and soda and goes perfectly well with vanilla ice cream. If you’re someone who must begin your day with caffeine, you can opt for the Love Love Hot Marshmallow Latte ($12.99). This caramel latter’s cuteness level increased due to the Pompompurin and Macaroon marshmallows. The perfect time is to drink when the marshmallows start melting.
Interested in indulging in an ambience reminiscent of the room where Pompompurin lives, this is the café to go! You’ll feel as though you are hanging out with Pompompurin and his friends while enjoying a joyful meal. You can also purchase Pompompurin merchandise ranging from handbags, water tumblers to plush toys.
