Pho Street – Pho with Spicy Broth? Count Me In!
August 04, 2020
Foodies tend to get a bit crazy about pho, the anise-laced rice noodle soup that is one of the world’s greatest comfort foods. Every element of this creation is satisfying — from the tender meat and sprigs of fresh basil to the delicate rice noodles and fragrant broth. They amaze me every time I eat them.
Popular Vietnamese restaurant, Pho Street, has launched a new spicy broth with 3 levels of spiciness (selection of spiciness level is available for a limited time only). Whether you’re just looking for a little kick, or are a daredevil bracing yourself for a challenge, Pho Street’s latest pho dish will be right up your alley.
Spices such as shallots, garlic, lemongrass, and dried shrimp are made into a thick chilli paste, before it is added to the original broth. You can, of course, expect the aroma and taste of the broth to be elevated.
If it is your first time at Pho Street, you must try the Signature Pho Beef Combination (Set $13.90, A La Carte $9.90). The deeply amber beef broth, which has been boiled for a good 8 hours, glitters with tiny droplets of their special oil blend. In the depths is a hoard of thinly-sliced beef, along with bumpy white tripe, gobs of tendon and juicy handmade beef balls. Don’t forget to squeeze the lime wedges over, and pair the imported Vietnamese pho with the holy basil. A set comes with a summer roll and iced lemon tea.
Now, you can choose between the original or spicy broth. The spicy soup, too, is a riot of flavours. This is a splendid version of Bun Bo Hue. The robust soup holds a flawless balance of spiciness, saltiness and umami.
It is hard enough to get two people, much less an entire table, to unanimously agree that a dish is great. And our entire table did just that for the Pho Beef Tender Slices in Spicy Broth (Set $12.90, A La Carte $8.90) which was terrifically satisfying. If it starts to rain, or you are working in a cold office, this hearty bowl of noodles might be exactly what you are looking for.
Besides pho, there are other spanking new dishes such as Spicy Beef with Fragrant Rice or Rice Vermicelli (Set $13.90, Ala Carte $9.90) and Roasted Pork Chop with Fragrant Rice (Set $12.90, Ala Carte $8.90). The spicy beef was easy to love. It was marinated in a heady mix of aromatics. It emerges beautifully tender and flavourful, and comes with some vegetables and a crispy pork roll.
Crowd favourites such as Lemongrass Chicken with Rice or Rice Vermicelli (Set $11.90, Ala Carte $7.90) and Dry Rice Vermicelli with Grilled Pork Belly (Set $12.90, Ala Carte $8.90) are still available, if you are wondering.
For starters, the Fresh Summer Rolls ($4.90) — filled with prawn, pork belly, vermicelli and fresh herbs — are well paired with a thick peanut dipping sauce. We also enjoyed the Vietnamese Snack Platter ($8.90) which comes with crispy fried pork rolls, roasted chicken skewers and Vietnamese prawn cakes. These are all homemade flavourful bite-sized snacks.
Banh Mi is one of their bestsellers. And it’s easy to see why. Crispy baguette aside, we were bowled over by the generous portions of grilled meat, as well as the amazingly harmonious flavours. Choose from Banh Mi Grilled Pork Belly (Set $10.50, Ala Carte $6.50), Banh Mi Lemongrass Chicken (Set $10.50, Ala Carte $6.50) or Banh Mi Beef (Set $10.90, Ala Carte $6.90). The smoky sweetness of the meat, and the sweet-savoury sauce just worked so well together.
Additionally, there are new meat-free Vietnamese dishes in Pho Street (for a limited time only, from 10 August 2020 onwards). Pho Street has noted a greater demand for meat-free dishes, and healthier options for the masses, and have partnered with Quorn to curate 3 meat-free dishes. Quorn’s products are: meat-free, protein from fungi, high in protein, and high in fibre.
The Meat-free Pho Soup (set: $12.90, ala carte: $8.90) has been specially concocted. The broth is of great quality even though it is free of meat. Do give the Meat-free dry rice vermicelli (set: $12.90 , ala carte: $8.90); topped with meat-free golden fried bites & crunchy vegetables , and Meat-free golden fried bites summer roll ($4.90 for 2 pcs) a go as well!
Don’t forget to get a glass of the refreshing Lemon Cooler ($3.90), Passionfruit & Basil Mojito ($3.90) or Lychee Soda ($3.90) to quench your thirst!
There’s nothing pretentious or fancy here. Pho Streets promises hearty delicious Vietnamese fare that is executed well. Certainly un-pho-gettable!
