Pha Muk – Authentic Thai Yong Tau Foo and Papaya Salad Eatery has moved to Golden Mile Tower
February 08, 2023
Golden Mile Complex has always been the place for authentic, budget-friendly Thai food finds. Unfortunately, this Little Thailand is sold en bloc and all tenants have to vacate the premise. The famous Thai supermarket is reopening at Aperia Mall.
The small eatery within the supermarket Pha Muk has relocated to Golden Mile Tower, just next door! Helmed by a husband-wife duo, they have been selling traditional Thai dishes such as papaya salad, yentofu and crab laksa.
I started off with my favourite appetiser, the Papaya Salad, which was mixed with shredded slices of green papaya, cherry tomatoes, long beans, pork floss, and chilli padi. Green papaya has a great crunch and really absorbs the flavours surrounding it. The first flavours that hit me were distinct and fragrant notes of fish sauce. It’s spicy, cooling, crunchy, tangy, and sweet all at the same time. It hits all flavour notes and literally explode in your mouth.
The spicy and sour Som Tam goes well with the classic Braised Pork Noodles, which are both savoury in their own ways. The rice noodles are served with thick pork chunks, meatballs, and plump shiitake mushrooms. The pork chunks were slightly tough on our day of visit but I enjoyed my bowl of pork broth because I added chilli, sugar and peanut to make it more flavourful. The papaya salad helps to cut any fattiness as well as enhance tastiness.
But don’t neglect the equally hot Crab Laksa that will knock your socks off. We ordered the last bowl for the day and saw the lady boss making her own laksa paste at the end of our meal. It is creamy, slightly spicy, with lots of herbs, spices, and coconut – oh and don’t forget the fresh crab meat.
Another popular dish is the Kway Teow Yentofu Soup. It was full of ingredients consisting of deep-fried wanton, cuttlefish, slices of fishcake, vegetables, and noodles. The reddish-pink broth made from fermented pink tofu comes with a light sweetness.
This is probably one of the few places in Singapore where you can find fermented rice salad (nem klook) too. Pha Muk is quite the place to experience a traditional Thai food experience!
