Penang Delights – Delicious Penang Prawn Mee & Lor Mee in Ang Mo Kio
September 30, 2021
Ang Mo Kio has always been my home and Penang Delights is the stall my mother and I often patronised when I was a kid. I would always order lor mee — I guess my standards of a bowl of good lor mee came from them. It is also one of my favourite places to go to for a tasty bowl of prawn noodles.
This nondescript stall is located in Ang Mo Kio S11 (in front of Jubilee Square) and just beside the old Rasa Sayang Western Food Stall. They only have two items on the menu – lor mee and prawn mee.
Thick and flavoursome gravy is ladled onto yellow noodles, and the ensemble is topped with braised egg, pork slice, kang kong, beansprout and fish cake. It always looks exceptionally appetising! I love that hint of herbal fragrance in the gravy. Comforting, and oh-so-full of flavours! A spoonful of their homemade chilli sauce and a drizzle of vinegar made the dish even better.
Besides Lor Mee, they also serve Prawn Noodles. The prawn broth is boiled with prawn head, prawn shell and pork ribs, giving it a distinct deep orange hue. Upon order, the boss will blanch the noodles and kangkong before adding in prawns, sliced pork, fish cake, fried shallots and chilli paste. Then, he adds in the aromatics and robust prawn broth.
Give it a good mix before eating and you will find the broth incredibly full-bodied, and laced with hints of sweetness. My husband found it a tad too sweet for his liking but the addition of chilli balanced that right out. They serve decent-sized prawns that are not overcooked. Peeling the prawns isn’t difficult. Gulping a spoonful of noodles, prawns and sliced pork is always satisfying.
This is a reliable spot you can always count on if you want a delicious bowl of lor mee or hei mee.
