Or Tor Kor Market – One of the Best Market in Bangkok
October 06, 2012
Located next to Bangkok’s busy Chatuchak weekend market, Or Tor Kor Market is ranked as one of the 10 world’s fresh market by CNN.
When we say “market”, I am sure many of us will think of it as wet and smelly market. But it is definitely not the case for Or Tor Kor Market. In fact, this is one of the cleanest market I have ever seen.
The market is separated into different sections. We first walk pass a bazaar which sells different souvenirs.
I bought one of these loofah body scrub home and my aunty thought it was bird’s nest! She carefully packed it in a box and when I came home, she asked me:”You go Thailand buy bird’s nest ah?”
No no aunty, it is just a body scrub.
Snacks and Thai sweets are also plentiful, whether the traditional kind or modern varieties, such as kanom krok (grilled coconut pancakes), sticky rice sweets, steamed palm sugar desserts, kanom bueng (coconut crepes), and many more such as…
Khao Lam – glutinous sticky rice in bamboo.
Belachan
Kanom Lar
Sesame Egg Roll
Fish Skin
Jumbo Herbal Sausage
Jumbo Herbal Sausage
Green chilli dip to go with the Jumbo Herbal Sausage
There is also satay
You can choose a raw fish
Or buy home some fried fish!
Look at the fish heads!
Products displayed here are selected among the best found in the entire country. There is an incredible range of beautiful fruits, extremely fresh vegetables, meats and seafood.
So you think this is mango? Think again.
It is Thai durian! This particular durian shop sells very yummy durian and the aunty let you try it.
Sweet Thai mangoes!
Buy mangoes from here! Very sweet mangoes, trust me! We bought about 4kg mangoes back to Singapore. Just tell them when are you going back, and they will pick the mangoes and box them up for you. When you come back to your hometown, just open it and eat. Very very sweet!
If you still have stomach for more food, try their glutinous rice with mango!
Delicate garland design, isn’t it?
Thai style of chap chai peng! They have lots of variety such as Steamed fish curry custard, som tam, chili pastes, chili dips, fresh herbs and spices, green curry, red curry, vegetables stir-fried dishes, deep-fried fish, and grilled prawns are all available at Or Tor Kor Market.
And their famous otah!
A friend was asking me if Chinatown in Thailand sells the best roast meat. I do agree, but you can also get quality roast meat at Or Tor Kor.
Of course, you can buy raw meat, raw fish, raw prawns etc here!
Or Tor Kor Market is a nice place to stroll around, whether you are just browsing, taking photos, or actually doing some grocery shopping. This place is well known for its fresh and large-sized fruit of all types and varieties.
Or Tor Kor is mostly visited by rich business tycoons and some of the food prices you see here may be slightly higher (actually cannot really tell much difference to me, it is still very affordable) than other markets, but for the cleanliness and quality of food, I think it is all worth it.
So after your shopping at Chatuchak, head down to Or Tor Kor Market for a walk!
