Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant

Singaporeans have the hots for spicy food. Food lovers are always seeking out their next big chili thrill. Just diagonally opposite Ng Ah Sio Bak Kut Teh at Rangoon Road, is (Old) Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant.

Lai Huat Seafood Restaurant

It first opened in Lavender in 1990 and now two brothers are running it at two different places – Horne Road and Rangoon Road. Thankfully the place is air-conditioned but don’t expect fancy decor. The menu items might be limited, but at least each is of decent quality which explains why people from all races choose to dine here to satisfy their sambal cravings.

The weather has been really humid lately but aunty and I have been having a sambal craze. I know this sounds crazy. But after a long day of work, we just look forward to our meal-time to help us re-fuel. And sambal works perfectly.

Sambal kang kong ($6) is one of my favourite local veggie dishes. You need a strong stove to achieve the best result and this plate of vegetables would work better with more dried shrimps.

The mussels ($8) were soaked with an eggy tomato sauce which resembles chilli crab sauce. They were nicely soft and sweet when we bit into them.

Presenting to you their signature sambal pomfret ($32), which my Aunty and I enjoyed very much. The deep fried fish is generously coated with fragrant sambal and were crunchy to the bones. It’s quite spicy for me but I like to scoop up extra belacan to go with my bowl of white rice.

The wicked combination of the addictively crispy pomfret topped with heaps of sambal belacan gives me a kick every single time. An ice cold can of Coke cooled my tastebuds and the sweet-sour tang made my tongue ready for more sambal. SO SHIOK!
