Nam Seng Noodles – Superb Venison Hor Fun by an 88 year old Aunty
March 29, 2017
88-year-old Madam Leong Yuet Meng has been whipping up plates of scrumptious venison hor fun and wanton mee for more than half a century. She started as a canteen vendor at a school, before she set up her stall at the former Stamford Road National Library. For the past 20 odd years, she has been serving many white-collared workers in the CBD.
The Wanton Noodle ($4/$5) here evokes a sense of nostalgia. The egg noodles are cooked to a very springy texture and have a good bite. Char siew here is the old-school kind, mostly lean meat, with a tinge of sweet tasting marinade. Remember to add some green chilli for that tanginess. Each plate of noodles is accompanied by a bowl of wanton soup, and the wantons are generously stuffed with meat.
However, the highlight of our meal is, of course, Nam Seng’s Venison Hor Fun ($5)! Honestly speaking, this is one of the best hor fun we’ve tried – velvety smooth and very soft. The venison meat is tender, and has soaked up the thick, savoury gravy really well. It’s almost impossible not to finish slurping down the last mouthful of gravy.
We heard the queue during lunch hour can be crazy, so it’s best to arrive earlier. Nam Seng also offers soy sauce chicken noodle, seafood hor fun, and another hot favourite, fried rice.
