May Pho Culture – Authentic Vietnamese Beef Pho & Spring Rolls Hidden In Chinatown!
July 20, 2022
Sitting amidst the shops outside the ground floor of Fook Hai Building and just six minutes by foot from Chinatown MRT is a quaint, homey Vietnamese eatery called May Pho Culture. This is where you can find large bowls of pho, banh mi and spring rolls, all prepared by a true-blue Vietnamese chef who hails from the bustling city of Ho Chi Minh.
The air-conditioned interior is decorated simply and is rather cosy. Don’t worry if you’re wondering if the place will be too packed come lunchtime. Head up the stairs towards the back to grab a seat on their second floor! I loved how the lady boss proudly came over to show me her newest item on the menu.
Their pho comes with different cuts of beef such as brisket ($12.90) and beef coin ($12.90), as well as chicken variations like chicken thigh ($9.90). There’s also banh mi ($7.90) stuffed with pork belly, not to mention a variety of beverages that include Vietnam coffee ($3.80 for hot, $4.80 for iced) and Vietnam tea ($1 for cup, $3.80 for pot).
The Beef Tenderloin Pho ($13.90) came in a fairly large bowl that held freshly blanched rice noodles and slices of beef that were still slightly pink. While the beef was definitely something that’s up my alley, those who prefer theirs fully cooked need not fret as the piping hot soup will slowly get the job done for you.
The first slurp of the silky-smooth flat noodles gave off a herbaceous tinge that wasn’t too overwhelming. Savoury notes then came into play after the initial hit of fragrance from three types of herbs – cilantro, Thai basil and rice paddy herb. There was also a hint of sweetness and a lingering beefy aftertaste that was absolutely addictive.
The star of the show, however, was definitely the beef tenderloin slices that were amazingly tender. I can honestly say that this beef pho is one of the best I’ve had in Singapore so far. They even serve a herb basket, as well as lime and chilli on the side. Their pickled garlic and fiery chilli oil condiments were super on point!
Their Spring Rolls ($6.90 for medium) are also a 100% must-try. Deep-fried and beautifully crispy on the outside, the rolls were were packed with a savoury meat filling that was perfectly well-seasoned and not at all dry. They came paired with a side of chilli that was very similar to chinchalok.
May Pho Culture definitely serves up really good and authentic Vietnamese cuisine and there’s no doubt that I will be coming by again for the beef pho and spring rolls, and to give the banh mi a go!
