The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf – Beanstro
I frequent The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf (CBTL) for their original ice blended drinks. This was my first time at Beanstro, a venture by the chain to bring exclusive dishes, on top of their signature beverages, to the table. We started the afternoon with a Crispy Soft Shell Crab Salad ($19.50++); a golden crustacean on a bed of fresh mangoes, hand-picked crab meat, cherry tomatoes, Japanese cucumber and mesclun salad drizzled with citrus dressing. The salad is refreshing and zesty, with generous toppings of fresh and crispy crab meat!
The star of Beanstro came next. The Oven Braised Beef Short Ribs ($32.50++) comprises US beef short ribs that have been meticulously braised for twenty four hours. The result? Short ribs that are fall-off-the-bone tender. The ribs are served with mashed potatoes, caramelised baby onions, sauteed vegetables and natural jus. The portion is quite large and is perfect for sharing.
Currently, incorporating local influences into Western desserts seems to be in trend. The unique Pandan Gula Melaka Cake ($8++ per slice) is a perfect example of this. The light, layered pandan chiffon sponge cake has cream cheese filling in between, and is dusted with shredded coconut and drizzled with gula melaka syrup. The cake is not cloyingly sweet and the natural fragrance of the pandan and gula melaka really shines through. For drinks, the Berry’d Treasure is a great choice, and will surely be a hit with the kids!

TWG Tea Salon & Boutique
Nestled within an oasis of calmness located in the luxury circle of The Shoppes, TWG Tea serves an afternoon tea combining their celebrated sweet and savoury tea-infused cuisines. The TWG Tea Boutique located just next to the Tea Salon also features a luxurious collection of tea accessories, making it the perfect gift destination for all ages.
We ordered the Fortune High Tea Set ($40++) which came with a pot of tea, Truffle Croque, two scones and three TWG macarons. The Truffle Croque was amazing as the earthiness of the roasted Portobello mushrooms was nicely complemented by the Emperor Pu-Erh infused white truffle bechamel sauce. My personal favourite was TWG’s scones which were light, and fluffy. Spread the house-made TWG Tea jelly and whipped cream onto the scones and voila!

DC Comics Superhero Cafe
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s the DC Comics Super Hero Cafe! This bright, vibrant, and spacious character café is decked out in all things DC! From life-size figures of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman, to cute character-themed coasters, the cafe appeals not only to fans of the DC universe, but even visitors who cannot resist taking a closer peek as they pass by! In addition to a casual dining area, a sandwich and salad counter, and a patisserie and ice-cream station, the café also features a retail space filled with all sorts of DC Comics merchandise.
Select from an extensive menu featuring the High Tea Special ($10++), which offers diners a choice of cheesecake, rainbow cake, chocolate rainbow cake, chocolate raspberry fudge cake or strawberry tart, with a cup of coffee or tea. The desserts are all colourfully decorated with superhero logos emblazoned on them!
If you hungry for more, explore the café’s main courses, which have been named after the DC Universe Superheroes. The Superman: A Smallville Original Burger ($25.90++) sees a juicy chicken patty and turkey bacon served with a superman brioche bun, cheddar cheese, sunny side up egg, mesclun salad and nacho chips. Don’t forget to break the runny yolk for that added flavour!
For Batman fans, The Dark Knight Burger is a must-order! It comprises a succulent wagyu beef patty topped with grilled portobello mushroom, and served with Dark Knight charcoal burger buns, mesclun salad, red onions and shoestring fries. The inky black hue of the burger was indeed eye-catching and I must admit that out of the two mains, the Dark Knight Burger was undisputedly my favourite because of its juicy, rich beef patty. Like many, I was initially hesitant to step into gimmicky character cafes, but DC Comics Super Hero Cafe has proven itself capable of whipping up great food and providing an immersive experience that really made high tea more thrilling and exciting!
