Makan Melaka – Freshly Made Chendol to Beat the Heat
March 25, 2017
Singaporeans whine about the scorching hot weather almost every day. And one great way to beat the heat is to have a cooling dessert. Chendol is the perfect solution! Makan Melaka’s chendol will satisfy all cravings for shaved ice with sugar syrup. You can get a bowl of icy goodness for less than $3!
Makan Melaka has a relatively new outlet in Jurong West since late last year, and the stall has seen many chendol lovers popping by to seek refuge from the sweltering afternoon. The hawker’s day begins as early as 5am. The Chendol here is made from scratch daily, and soaked in water throughout the day to maintain its freshness. It’s no surprise that the chendol here boasts a nice texture – each strand is tender, with a subtle pandan flavour.
The hawker is very generous with the Gula Melaka and coconut milk here. He makes a trip up to Malacca every fortnight just to purchase his supply of Gula Melaka, ensuring that the quality meets his expectations. Furthermore, the coconut milk is sourced from suppliers who squeeze it fresh daily. If you’re not a fan of desserts that are too sweet or too rich, you can request for the hawker to adjust accordingly.
Besides the traditional Chendol Melaka ($1.50), you can also get red bean, corn, glutinous rice, and durian, or a mixture of the ingredients. Chendol Melaka with Red Bean & Corn ($2.10) contains sweet mung beans that are plump, yet soft. It’s good enough without the corn, so next time we’ll just stick to chendol melaka with red bean. The taste of the chendol is not too sweet, and we like the contrasting texture of the mushy mung beans and slimy chendol strips. Chendol Melaka with Glutinous Rice ($1.80) has well-balanced ingredients and a refreshing aftertaste. It’s quite light and thirst-quenching.
So, if you’re living in the West and complaining that there’s nothing good in your area, think again! On days when the heat becomes unbearable, you can check out Makan Melaka.
