Kong Cafe – Korean Cafe With Incredible Waffles & Honey Garlic Butter Wings!
January 29, 2020
Kong Cafe is a relatively new cafe that is situated in front of King Albert Park Station, so it’s very easy to locate. The space is opened by a Korean artist Hanna Mi Kim, so you can expect a Korean-inspired menu.
The menu was certainly unique. They were a bunch of photo prints that were pasted on an isolated wall near the counter. It’s unusual that’s for sure, but it works.
Their savoury waffles ($18) is one of the more popular items on the menu, so I decided to get it. I was surprised that my waffles didn’t come with extra maple syrup, but hey, I think that’s the point of a savoury waffle? Or maybe they forgot to serve it. I will never know.
First things first, can you see the amount of juice coming out of the chicken thigh? Oh mamma mia. The juicy and tender chicken was very nicely battered and crispy. It tasted like pretty average fried chicken, nothing new or special, but delicious nonetheless.
The waffles were decently fluffy, but not crispy enough for me. They also tasted pretty eggy, which might be because a soufflé batter was used to make it.
I don’t consider myself a scrambled eggs kind of person, but my oh my were these good. The eggs had just the right amount of creaminess, without being too runny or “wet”. It was kind of like a mix of scrambled eggs and omelette. It could use a little more seasoning, but it shouldn’t matter if you’re eating it with the waffles and the chicken.
The moment I laid eyes on the picture of the Honey Garlic Butter wings ($12 for 4), I knew I needed them. Honey butter is a popular combination in Korea. I think it only works in some dishes. Here, they’ve included garlic in their signature honey butter sauce. I absolutely loved it.
The addition of garlic helped made the sauce even more flavourful and fragrant. With the honey, it almost tasted caramelised. The chicken wings were crispy and juicy, but I wished that each wing was more evenly coated in the sauce.
We decided to try a new item on the menu, the Oreo Ice Blended ($8.50). Each sip promised a delicious milky oreo slush. I thoroughly enjoyed it (save for a few chunks of ice at the bottom), but my wallet didn’t. You can honestly get this from a bubble tea shop at a cheaper price, and it will taste just as good.
Overall, the food here is not too bad, but it is a little pricey. I highly recommend the honey butter wings, which also comes in a hot and sticky flavour.
Kong Cafe has a study area just for students, with power sockets available as well, so this would be a great place to study and chill with your friends.
