Kokoyo Nyonya Delights – A Young Chef’s Tribute to His Grandma’s Peranakan Recipes
April 04, 2025

I’ve been hearing about Kokoyo Nyonya Delights for a while now, and I finally got the chance to visit this humble little eatery tucked away in Serangoon.
Opened by 23-year-old Ernest Ang, this cosy eatery is more than just a business — it’s his heartfelt tribute to his 73-year-old grandma, whose home-cooked Peranakan meals shaped his childhood. Even the name “Kokoyo” is a playful nod to how she pronounces “coconut”!
I started with the Nasi Lemak with Inchi Kabin (S$10.90) and I was blown away. The chicken was fried fresh to order — crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. The coconut rice was fragrant and fluffy — not overly rich, but still full of flavour.
The Pig Stomach Soup was peppery and comforting, it reminded me of something my own grandma might cook. What surprised me most was the Sambal Bendi (okra). Their homemade cincalok sauce is tangy, umami, and absolutely addictive, adding a delicious umami kick that had me going back for more.
Adding a special touch to the eatery’s charm, Ernest’s beloved grandmother still makes traditional Nyonya kuehs by hand every day — think soft and chewy ang ku kueh, delicate layers of kueh lapis, and the ever-irresistible ondeh ondeh with that oozy gula melaka centre.
Kokoyo Nyonya Delights isn’t trying to be flashy or trendy. Instead, it’s heartfelt and honest. Will I be back? Without a doubt. It’s not just the food, the service staff here are really attentive.
