Kim Huat Wanton Mee – Tasty Traditional Wanton Mee Not to be Missed in Bukit Merah
August 27, 2022
A long queue can be daunting sometimes, but since when has that stopped Singaporeans from joining the line anyway? And the long lines that stem from Kim Huat Wanton Mee are a testament to how good the wanton mee here is. Don’t let the lines deter you from getting a taste of good ol’ fashioned wanton mee; it’s definitely worth the wait.
The family-run hawker stall has been in business for over 20 years and used to be located in Clementi before making the shift to Bukit Merah View Market & Hawker Centre. The husband-and-wife team takes charge of cooking up a storm in the kitchen, while their son assists with front-of-house matters such as taking orders and adding the final touches to orders (such as doling out the soup).
While the queue does get really long, the crew is rather efficient so the line moves fairly quickly. I noticed that it mostly comprised older folks and it was heartening to see the wife cheerfully engaging in playful banter with her regulars even as she was busy cooking.
Apart from wanton mee, you can also find Dumpling Noodle ($3.50/4), Ipoh Hor Fun ($3/4) and Mushroom Noodle ($3/4) on the menu.
I went for the classic Wanton Mee ($3/4) and as always, I requested for chilli to be added to my noodles. This one’s definitely for the spice lovers — the springy egg noodles were thoroughly tossed in the sweet soy sauce and chilli mixture, delivering quite the punch of heat on my first mouthful. I also liked how the noodles didn’t get dry over time.
While I usually dismiss the char siew that comes with wanton mee, it was hard to do the same for these ones. The char siew slices might look thin at first glance, but they had quite a nice bite to them. It might be a tad too sweet for some, but it perfectly complemented the heat of the noodles for me.
I would also like to give an honourable mention to the fresh crispy pieces of pork lard scattered across the noods. I only wished there was more of it.
There might only just be two wantons bobbing about in the soup, but they were both well-packed with minced meat, and were well seasoned and juicy.
I also decided to get the Dumpling Soup ($4) and the large bowl of clear and refreshing soup was filled with huge dumplings. The dumplings are stuffed with the same sweet mince meat filling, but with the addition of shrimps. It’s definitely one filling meal that will keep you going for the rest of the day (or at least until dinner).
There’s definitely some truth to long lines in Singapore that goes beyond reputation (aka just solid good food that needs to be appreciated more). Whether you’re dropping by Kim Huat Wanton Mee for breakfast or lunch, you won’t be disappointed!
