When it comes to Thai F&B establishments in Singapore, there’s certainly an abundance of them. But what about Thai restaurants that offer truly authentic Thai dishes and well-loved items that are popular in Thailand but little known in Singapore? Well, we are happy to report that Khao Hom by Rung Mama’s slew of delicious and authentic Thai dishes will definitely meet the mark.

Located within Djitsun Mall in Ang Mo Kio, Khao Hom by Rung Mama is led by a former Banyan Tree Resort chef. Made with only fresh ingredients and imported spices and herbs, all the dishes on the menu are true-blue Thai recipes handed down by the lady boss’ mum (who hails from Bangkok aka the Rung Mama herself!)

The Char-Grilled Squid ($20) might be listed as an appetiser on the menu, well this addictive dish was anything but that. We were definitely impressed by its hefty size and the little peeks of pure white squid flesh contrasted beautifully with the dark sauce it was marinated in. The chewy squid was very fresh and tasted delicious with the sweet sauce it was grilled with. We adored that hint of smokiness that it carried!

If you’re looking for a comforting and tasty bowl of soup, instead of the usual tom yum, go for the Spicy & Sour Prawn and Veggie Soup ($15). Word of caution: it comes with one heck of a spicy blow – so it’s definitely legit. That’s not to say it wasn’t delicious though! Beyond the spiciness came waves of tanginess, sweetness and lots of flavour from the slightly thickened soup. Dig in to unearth fresh prawns and vegetables as well!

A must-try that you absolutely cannot miss out on is one of Khao Hom’s signature and well-loved dishes – Omelette Roll with Crab Meat ($30). If you’re a fan of eggs and crab meat, this is the ultimate dish for you! Cut through the thick, eggy roll and marvel at the generous amount of crab meat stuffed in between ultra-fluffy layers of the omelette. I love how they don’t skimp on the crab meat and there’s no fishiness clinging onto them. Take your crab omelette for a dip in their tangy chilli mix to further amp up this gastronomic trip.

Can’t get enough seafood? Khao Hom has quite a few fried fish dishes to choose from but we enjoyed the Fried Fish with Sweet Thai Chilli Sauce ($33) the most. Beneath the crispy skin of the fish is a bounty of delicate white flesh just waiting to be devoured. The sauce was on the sweeter side with just the right touch of spice that doesn’t overwhelm the natural, clean flavours of the fish itself.

Here’s another favourite for folks who love spicy food. The Drunken Noodles Mee Mama ($9) brought forth an enchanting myriad of flavours from the first bite, with a hit of spiciness taking precedence. The noodles were perfectly-cooked and properly coated in the sauces, along with a good amount of smokiness infused into them. Choose between chicken, pork or beef as your choice of protein, or go for a little upgrade by opting for seafood for an extra dollar.

Don’t forget to browse through the chef’s special menu as well! We were hooked on the Spicy Garlic Lime Pork ($12) from the get go! Each slice of pork was super-duper tender and liberally drizzled in a refreshingly tangy lime sauce. The amount of aromatic garlic was also just as plentiful, making this one exceptionally addictive dish.

The Fried Garlic Bits & Chilli with Prawn ($18) was yet another moreish dish imbued with tons of flavour. Spoon up the crispy garlic bits and relish them with the large, plump prawns dressed in a sticky, sweet sauce. If you’re a fan of garlic, these two dishes are just what you need for an incredibly satisfying meal!

Of course, we had to wrap up our meal with a perennial Thai dessert and there’s nothing quite like the Red Ruby with Coconut Gelato ($8). Fun fact: this recipe is crafted by the lady boss herself! The Red Ruby was so refreshing and the coconut gelato was amazingly creamy and smooth, combining these two was simply a perfection.

Easties will also be happy to know that Khao Hom will be opening their second outlet in Katong come late October 2022, so be sure to keep a lookout on their socials for more details (and also upcoming promotion!). Until then, head on down to Ang Mo Kio to treat yourselves to an outstanding Thai meal!
