Kelantan Kway Chup • Pig’s Organ Soup – MICHELIN Bib Gourmand Stall in Berseh Food Centre

I was at Berseh Food Centre one evening for a plate of Lim’s Fried Oyster — a farewell visit before their retirement. As I wandered through the upper level of the hawker centre, the familiar red signage of Kelantan Kway Chup • Pig’s Organ Soup caught my eye. Seeing a modest queue forming in front of the MICHELIN Bib Gourmand-awarded stall, I decided to grab a plate to go with my orh luak.

It was close to closing time, and I was lucky to snag the last set before the stall shuttered for the day. “I start the shop early in the day, it has been long hours for me,” the lady boss told me with a tired smile — a quiet testament to the grit behind many of our hawker heroes.

I ordered the two-pax kway chup set. The braised platter came doused in a herbal-based sauce that was lighter than most, but still fragrant. There was a generous medley of pig skin, pork belly, and intestines — the pork belly boasted a good meat-to-fat ratio, while the pig skin was chewy without being rubbery. The intestines were well-cleaned and tender, a detail I appreciated.

The bowl of kueh on the side featured rice sheets that leaned firmer than what I usually prefer (I still dream about Feng Ji’s version!), but they were smooth enough and soaked up the herbal notes decently. The broth was clean, slightly savoury, and comforting, though I wished for just a bit more punch in flavour.

What surprised me most was the Pig’s Organ Soup — a dish I almost skipped but ended up really enjoying. The soup was robust and peppery, with whiffs of heat that danced on the tongue. Inside, the liver was delightfully powdery, the stomach had a satisfying chew, and the meatballs were bouncy and juicy. It was a well-balanced bowl that I could happily slurp on a rainy afternoon.

Beyond the signature dishes, the stall also offers braised pig trotters, duck meat, beancurd skin, and salted vegetables — great additions for those wanting a heartier meal.

It may not top my personal list of kway chup favourites, but Kelantan Kway Chup • Pig’s Organ Soup is a solid pick for a satisfying, nostalgic meal if you’re ever in the area. Plus, it pairs surprisingly well with a plate of oyster omelette — trust me on this one.
