Kedai Makan Muhajirin – $1 Nasi Lemak In Toa Payoh!

$1 Nasi Lemak?! Yes, for real. With the increasing cost of living, it’s rare to find hawkers who insist on keeping their food at such low prices to cater to the elderly residents living in the area. I love how there are still business owners who would display the kampong spirit in this manner.

Other items on their menu that are equally affordable are Mee Siam, Mee Rebus and Lontong (going at $2.50 per plate). Despite the low prices, the quality of food is still not bad! I can understand why their loyal customers would be willing to brave the queue and keep on coming back.

There are two options for the $1 Nasi Lemak, you can go with either the kuning fish or ikan bilis. I got the kuning fish because it seemed to be the more value-for-money option because you’d get a whole (though small) fish in this $1 set! The fish was deep-fried to the point that it was very crispy. It was a chore to debone, which made me think that I should have gone with the ikan bilis instead.

I love the rice and the sambal chilli. The nasi was slightly starchy, which helped it stay in the perfect shape even after you dig in. It also had hints of coconut and pandan leaf fragrance in every spoonful. The chilli was savoury and sweet, with a manageable spice level, and paired very well with the rice.

The Mee Rebus came in a thick, creamy and peppery sauce. Squeeze in the lime for an extra tanginess which complements the flavours of the fermented beans in the gravy!

There was not much that went into the mee rebus except for half a hard-boiled egg, some diced tau pok puffs, large green chilli, spring onions and deep-fried shallots but this very affordable no-frills dish makes a hearty breakfast.

I thought the mee siam was on the sweeter side on my first bite, but a sourness kicked in shortly after. The toppings are almost the same as what’s in the mee rebus: half a hard-boiled egg, diced tau pok puffs, deep-fried shallots, spring onions and lime. The only difference is the addition of a dollop of sambal chilli.

Give it a good mix and it’s bound to pack a punch in every mouthful. If you prefer a lighter breakfast in terms of flavours, this mee siam might be more suitable for you. It is not as heavy as the mee rebus but it makes an equally satisfying breakfast.

The chefs and stall assistants are very friendly! I love how they are patient with every customer despite the long queue behind us. Other than the pocket-friendly items on the menu that were featured, they also have enticing dishes like Nasi Sambal Goreng ($4) and more!
